    Inexpensive .308 Rifle Choices

I would love to get a high power rifle for long range shooting. What would be a good choice for a rifle that is reliable and affordable. I am looking to spend $400. Am I just dreaming at that price? Thanks.

Marlin 308 (1) or Stevens 200 (2) + nikon prostaff (3) and you're good. You're not getting anything semi auto at that price range, but there are plenty of bolt actions available to you. Also, this list can vary depending on what you mean by long distance and what exactly you're trying to hit (paper/steel/game)

Id save a little more and get a Rem 700 SPS. Then when you get more money you could upgrade to your desire. Anything else and your stuck with it as is for the most part.

Stevens 200. Stock kinda sucks, but it's essentially the much more expensive Savage 10FP minus the Accutrigger. And it will shoot sub-MOA out of the box

              What's "long range" mean? 400 yards? 1000? 100?

A Saiga .308 is great, nice AK style autoloader. But don't expect it to be at all accurate at 600 yards, especially without a scope. Your lucky to get a 1 moa - 2 moa grouping with good ammo out of a Saiga at 100 yards.

Any of the lower end tacti-cool bolt action rifles are going to give you fantastic .5 moa right out of the box. BUT THAT's with a SCOPE! There are no irons on these guns.

Finding a used SPS and putting a cheapo scope on it might be had for $400 if you found a really good deal. Getting a new saiga and grabbing some cheap mount and a simple $75 dollar basic chinese scope is also an option for $400, all new. Even that is still a deal, $400 is not alot to go do long range with.

I had a Savage 10 with the accutrigger. It was pretty accurate with some cheap wally world rings and a leupold vxi. Sold it since it didn't see much range time. Kind of miss it now.....

The Marlin XS7 can be had for under $400 and it's available in .308. I've got an XL7 in .270 and it kicks ***. It is a great hunting rifle and will shoot under 2" groups right out of the box. If you are looking for something to turn into a precision rifle though, that you can change as your needs change, I'd spend a couple hundred dollars more and get the Remington 700 mentioned above.

I would not get any .308 rifle weighing much under 10 lbs. because the recoil is going to be very uncomfortable. That leaves out most sporting and hunting rifles since they usually weigh around 7 1/2 lbs. Save for a little while longer and get a Savage or Remington with a heavy barrel or get a rifle in .243 Win or 6mm Remington.
