Baretta BM 59 from a Garand receiver

So I got a hold of stripped receiver the other day, and I want to make a BM 59 out of it. I've been told it can be done (with some work) but I'm having some trouble finding info on them. Are these similar to the M14 in build? I know the mags are different, but bbl, trigger group, bolt, etc?? Thanks!

I had one of those ....

It was a comercial version that some one made After looking the thing over I would say it's more trouble than it's worth you have to do some serious machining on the receiver. Build yourself a grand then sell it and get yourself an M1A
    I won't be wronged
    I won't be insulted
And I won't be laid a hand on.
I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.....John Wayne

It's really more effort to convert a Garand to a BM59 than it's worth. Just buy a Cali legal BM-62 or BM-69.

You can screw a BM59 barrel, op rod, and gas group to Garand receiver. Leaving it as a Garand. Direct bolt up. Only thing needed after that is machine the "hooks" into the op rod. The are present, but un machined on the BM59 op rod. One would have the looks of a BM59(without the mag), but a Garand receiver and feed system.

Also, you'll need the mag catch and modify the garand magazine floorplate, need to remove the M1 Garand feeding mechanism, you'll need to create/install a spacer and modify the receiver to accept the magazines. You'll also need to modify the stock as well. After you modify the receiver, you'll need to re-heat treat it too.

If I had a Garand I would take photos comparing them against my BM59.

The Beretta BM59 might be a problem.
            From http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/dwcl/12275.php comes
12276. As used in this chapter, "assault weapon" shall mean the following designated semiautomatic firearms:
            (a) All of the following specified rifles:
            >snip<
            (13) Springfield Armory BM59

In addition, the AW Weapons guide on page 30 shows a picture of the SA BM59 and in the Comments section it says, "The marking "Beretta" may also be found but is not material to identifying it as an assault weapon."
            Good luck,

              bm59

Keep an eye out in the for sale section- I may be selling a Benet & Berden imported Beretta BM62 with no Springfield Armory markings on it in a couple of weeks. if you're set on converting the Garand, check out:

This website is for sale! reesesurplus.com is your first and best source for all of the information you’re looking for. From general topics to more of what you would expect to find here, reesesurplus.com has it all. We hope you find what you are searching for!

The only BM series rifle that's banned in Caifornia by name is the Springfield Armory BM-59. The Springfield BM-62 & 69 as well as the Benet & Berden imported Beretta BM-62 & 69 are legal as long as they do not have SB-23 "evil features" - i.e. the tricompensator w/ FH & GL or the so-called Nigerian pistol grip stock. Finally, mags can be problematic unless you stocked up on BM mags before 2000 - the 10-rounders are far & few between.

Good luck and post pictures when you're done!

but this isn't a BM59, per say. It's an M1 Garand receiver, in which I would modify to LOOK and function lik a BM59. I've gotten a few links from someone that lets me know it's quit possible, and even doable. The only reason I'm intersted in this design is mainly becuase I came accross the receiver for a SUPER deal, but I want a rifle that is .308 and lighter than the Garand. Thought I'd make a project out of it

True and that's all well'n'good if the (unnamed manufacturer) Garand receiver is not a SA or Beretta. Just reminding you of the 2 Roberti-Roos legal limitations.
There's lots of stuff for the BM59 at: http://www.reesesurplus.com/bm59parts.html and at one time Sarco had some parts.
Sounds like you are going to have some fun!

                    bm59

Only the Springfield Armory BM59 is banned by name. As stated by Roberti-Ross, Beretta may be stamped but is "not material to identifying it as an assault weapon" - i.e. Beretta stamped on the receiver is irrelevant. Your good to go even if your receiver is a Beretta BM59 receiver (although most of those are select-fire and that's another can of worms) as long as it doesn't have Springfield Armory stamped on it. See:

                    Good luck.

                      I have got a BM69 and a BM50 both from Reese.

Both have Beretta Italian mfg. receivers and BM59 parts, but the receivers clearly state BM69 and BM50.

The BM69 does not have the Grenade sight installed and the BM50 has the Grenade sight installed, but it does not have a stripper clip guide installed.

I have both installed with the Reese Muzzle Brake they sell, which give it the long look of the original Tri Compensator-Grenade Launcher...

Buy one of these, don't go off and build one, it will cost you allot of time, stress, and $$...

Oops, my misread; by name, SA BM59 is banned. Naturally, watch out for features of SB23.

I own a military Beretta BM-59, it is a factory M1 Garand conversion... "63" is the year of conversion.

Thanks a lot for the unput guys. I guess I like the look of the BM59 and the M14 (w/o the upper handguard on the garand). Could I just make a Garand in .308, mag fed, and use an m14 bbl? It looks like I can from the reessurplus and stuff I've seen.. heck, I'll make it a hybrid of all three!
