First AR build complete... I have a few questions

So I just finished building my first AR.
    • JD Machine lower
    • RRA lower parts kit
    • Hogue grip
    • Magpul CTR stock
    • CMMG upper
      • 14.5" chrome lined barrel and bore
      • Pinned and welded flash hider for 16" overall length
      • 1/7 twist
      • M16 bolt carrier
    • MAGPUL MBUS rear flip up sight

Now for a crappy iphone picture:

    Now a couple questions.

I have noticed my MBUS has about .020" of play forward and back. None left and right. Does anyone run these sights and if so, is this something I should be concerned about?

Also I'm interested in a free float rail to support a foregrip and my Surefire G2 light. I was looking at the DD Omega 7.0 the other day at Parallax Tactical and was impressed, but it's so pricey. I might just have to suck it up and buy it unless someone could suggest a good carbine length rail...

    Thanks.

I have a couple MBUS and haven't noticed any play in mine. I can't imagine that little amount of forward-and-back movement would effect the POI very much at all. I wouldn't worry about it right now, but if you get out there with it and it's noticeable then I would suggest upgrading to a metal BUIS (like Troy, MI, YHM, etc.)

As far as the rail question, I would absolutely, 100% recommend the DD Omega 7.0 rail. No other rail comes close to the simple drop-in installation and rock-solid performance - all in a super-light package - simply amazing design on that rail. I see them in the used section here for $200-$220, usually not even installed by the previous owner or gently used. Either way, get the DD Omega 7.0 you WILL NOT be sorry.

I have the rail below and am very happy with it, can't beat the price for a free floating rail.

I do not have the mbus so i cant comment.

But, I do have a 7" Daniel Defense M4 rail and I love it! DD rails are highly recommended.

It turns out that the screw that secures the sight was in the wrong way. I added some lock tight, flipped the screw, and now the sight is rock solid.

            Thanks for the advice everyone.

Since your hider is pinned, you will not be able to remove your front sight to install the rail. That will limit your choices to a two-piece design that clamps onto the barrel nut.

Oh, and nice looking rifle. I like the KISS type rifles and would leave it as is, unless you really need a light.

-Edit, I just looked at the Omega, and it looks like you know what you are doing.

May I ask why you want a "free float" rail system? With a 14.5", chrome lined barrel, a free float rail won't really help accuracy much at all. The DD Omega is a great rail, and if you really want free float get the DD. Otherwise just get any two piece rail from a quality manufacturer that fits your hands and that you like the look of.

                  Nice KISS build!

For the handguard you can go with an MOE handguard with the new Magpul rails add-on. This setup won't break the bank

Yup, I put an Omega 9.0 on my midlength, took me all of ten minutes to install, including reading the instructions. My son was so impressed that he got one too!
