    AR Stock on an AK

I am working on an AR/AK hybrid build and I am looking for anyone else who can share there experiance.

I am using the VLTOR buffer tube adapter on a fixed stock trunnion AK. It has an upward angle of 5-10 degrees from the back of the rifle and the stock doesn't collapse fully to the rifle due to the trunnion.

ACE makes an trunnion block that is installed and you cut off the back of the trunnion tang to install it. You then attach there "pig nose" adapter to the trunnion block and you can attach a standard AR buffer tube.

Has anyone done this mod? If so can you post any pictures?

    Thanks,

    -JP

I went the Vltor buffer tube and although it doesnt allow your entire stock to collapse to the point where the stock touches the rear of the receiver, its still a good very solid fit and only puts about a 1" gap. I think that is the best way to go. There are other stock/tube combos that are one piece but they seem cheap. On two of my saiga conversions, a rear trunion that accepts AR buffer tube was used, so when its collapsed, it gives you a very short package and probably what you are looking for. Also If you remove the buffer tube, there is a swivel stud there so you can just pop on a sling and you dont have the rear tangs sticking out. I know exactly what your looking for buddy but those rear trunions are hard to find. Copes distributing had them for a while and i wanted to buy some for future builds but i cant find them anymore, unfortunately! Give me min and i will add some pics to show you examples.

I went with a Tromix stock, I cut a chunk of steel plate and shaped it to fit inside the receiver. Drilled, tapped and welded in place. It was cheaper then buying the plate or the adapter, I did cut off the tang.

I used to hate the idea of AR stocks on AKs... until I saw Travis Haley's Saiga. All I can say is, he converted me.

You're not seeing things. That's a heavily modified Kalashnikov. It's very nice.

Go to the Saiga forums or look at the picture of Travis's AK to see the Pig Nose.
It's pretty much the only solution to allow the full range of motion for the AR stock. Just consider that once you cut the tang, the only way to put it back is welding, or putting in a new trunion. The VLTOR and CAA adapters are a great alternative fo not having to cut the Tang.

                    Thanks for all the responses.

I have a Bulgy AK74 AR/AK hybrid that is very similar to Travis' build, less the ambi charging handle. I have seen the pictures and the ACE pig nose adapter does allow the stock to close almost fully against the rear of the rifle. That said I don't mind the VLTOR that I am using now. I also like the QD mounts built into the VLTOR.

My issue is the angle of the rear stock. With the VLTOR it doesn't follow the line of the receiver, instead it is angled upwards around 5-10 degrees. If anyone has any better pictures of a build using the ACE that would let me see the angle of the buffer tube I could decide if it is worth making the change.

                    Thanks again guys.

The face of the Ace adapter is perpendicular to the receiver. I don't use the setup you are interested in but the skeleton stock comes straight out from the Ace, I dont see why a pig-nose and buffer tube would be any different.

The picture below is in the Ace gallery, looks straight to me.
