School Me on Scope mounts for the SPS Tactical

My wife just bought me a Remy 700 SPS Tactical in .308(for my birthday), and I'm trying to set it up so I can go shooting later this month. I'm just about ready to order the Vortex 4-16x50 Crossfire 30mm Scope, and I have been looking at Badger Ordnance for the mounting options, but I'm not quite sure what I should get. I eventually plan on attempting 600+yd shots with this rifle but probably not until I get better glass, and figure out what type of loading recipe I should use, and for the most part it will just be used at 400yds and below due to lack of shooting venues offering 600+yds. Can someone suggest a good option to mount my scope that will offer me what I'm looking for if possible?

    Thanks

Read this thread about choosing a Tactical Rifle. AR15barrels lists some different bases that are all good to go. Choose the one that fits your budget.

Just be aware that the Crossfire scope requires a battery. I can tell you first hand that the Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 1" scope is an excellent scope. $189 opticsplanet.com. I mounted mine to Leupold two piece base. Front was a dovetail rear was windage adjustable mount.

I had a SPS Tac a while back. It was a great shooter. My combo was a Falcon 4-14x44 FFP scope on a Warne 20 MOA steel base & Warne steel rings. It was a great combo for that rifle IMO. If I didn't need the money to fund the new rifle, I'd have kept it. Good luck!

Whatever brand you decide to go with, I'd suggest getting a one piece 20 moa base. The 20 moa will greatly expand the amount of optics you can use for long range shooting, and having a one piece base will add a little rigidity to the receiver.

not sure how a little piece of steel (or aluminum depending) will add rigidity to a receiver milled from solid steel.... i could be wrong (as usual...) though. I figure a 1 piece mount simply allows more scope ring mounting options.

I don't have any scientific testing to back that up, but it seems to me that on a receiver that's open across the top as well as the bottom mag well area like the remington, a one piece base has to help strengthen the action. Hanging a heavy barrel of the front of the action has to induce stress across the receiver, particularly under recoil. On a two piece base, some of that stress is likely transferred directly to the scope tube via the independently mounted rings on either side of that open top. Spanning that gap with a solid mount would effectively prevent that stress from reaching the scope tube, and should reduce any flex through the action. I'd love to have a slow motion camera to test this out, but until then I'm just going off a gut feeling.

agreed. It may not add much strength percentage wise but It couldn't hurt. and I will 2nd the 20moa bases. I have the 2pcs night force bases on my long range Remington and love them. Personally I think anything less than a nightforce on a quality bolt gun is a compromise, But I can understand alot of people not wanting to spend that much on one (myself included)

I have a SPS Tac. I decided on Badger 20 moa base and rings. They function well and appear solid enough to endure far more abuse than I plan on handing out!

As for the glass: I would wait until you can afford some nice glass. If you buy cheap you'll buy twice. I waited until I could afford a Leupold MK4 3.5-10x40. Believe me trying to shoot 600yds with cheap optics sucks!
