Socom-Replacing Plastic Stock With a Wood one

I saw an M1A in the Marketplace area of this forum for sale with a wood stock. I liked how it looked. I did some research and found a stock available from Boyd's for about $133 including shipping. It arrived a couple of days ago and I decided to put it together tonight. The stock came with only the wood, nothing else. the hardest part so far was getting the "barrel bands" off the plastic stock and onto the wood stock. Went fairly well but have a couple of problems.
The forward sling holder is not tapped for the screws from the original stock.

So I have to figure out what to do with that. The wood stock has a hole that the original one doesn't (both sides), probably have to buy a couple of screws and plates to fill the holes.

Most importantly though, the trigger group doesn't fit in because a slot is not cut out in the Boyd's stock.

There is one on the original like this:

Any suggestions? I'm thinking of just taking a file to it. Here is a pic of the project so far:

    Thanks.

The forward sling swivel is normally held in place by rivets, a couple of #10 screws will work. Try to find button head ones and paint to head black.

Wood stocks use a stock liner, which is held in place by two stock liner screws. Numrich usually has these parts.

You also need to replace the upper butt plate screw. Fiberglass stocks use a machine thread screw whereas the wood stocks use a wood screw. Again, you can get the correct screw from Numrich.

About two years ago I got a wood stock for my SOCOM from Fred's for like $30 and it fits perfectly with no mods. Is the one you got USGI?

Your project is coming along nicely and looking good

Im guessing the one you saw in the market place is mine.
I purchased the stock off a fellow calguner and was lucky enough that it came with all the hardware installed.

Currently I'm thinking of not selling as I really do like the looks. Aww the battle between projects and cash flow.

Here is a picture of the stock liner:

And here is a picture of the action in the stock.

+1, just get a complete (with metal and buttplate) USGI stock from Fred's and be done with it.

Next time I'll know better to post before buying anything. I just ordered the parts from Numrich.

Fulton Armory and ProMag sell a very short weaver rail with sling that fits in place of the original riveted band/sling. I bought the ProMag - costs about $40.00 and works fine for attaching a bipod or rail.

Get the screws here for $1.25 each
Brownells has been the leader in Gunsmithing Tools & Gun Parts since 1939. Check out the BRN-180 line of firearms, and more!

And get the tool as well so you don't mess up the screws:
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=2...NER_NUT_DRIVER (looks like it's back ordered)

                        Stock liners:
If you don't have one or don't feel like waiting 3+ months for Fred to ship it out (if he ever does), I have an extra one in good shape you can have. Just let me know where in OC you're located and we can meet up. PM me if you're interested.
