    Gun shows ?

Anyone ever buy uppers or kits for a AR at a gun show ?

Sounds stupid but for my first build I'm finding myself checking out web sites and looking at pictures of guns.

It boils down to becoming familiar with the parts

I think that familiarizing yourself with the products, and their Going price on the net will make you a wiser shopper if you decide to buy at a gun show.

Some gunshow vendors are cool and are OK to deal with on the other hand I see som guys advertising things that dont look right to me. Like unmarked barrels on upper advertised as a factory upper but lacking the factory packaging. You really need to buy from reputable vendors. It is easy to get smoked at a gunshow. Also the prices are not usually any better than online.I usually buy ammo at the gunshow.

Ya you really have to know what you are looking for. I have been told that some complete uppers had M4 ramps that didn't. Some complete uppers were missing BCG an like Dread said some REALLY messed up markings etc. I picked up a complete Yankee Hill mid upper for 600 bucks with out sights. Not fantastic but still good. I have seen much better deals at shows then the web but again know what you are looking for before attempting it. I wouldn't say anyone is out to screw anyone but some people are just selling something an not sure themselves what it is.

I don't buy much at gun shows except ammo. I find most parts and rifles to be overpriced. There are some good vendors who will have decent prices but some are crackhead prices.

a gunshow is a bad place to not know exactly what you're looking for. i never could just manage to window-shop at a gun show. come prepared with a purpose and you'll be okay. if not, you're going to end up drooling all over the black rifle stuff and some seller will see your drool marks and sell you an over-priced piece my friend. been there- done that.

so far the advice from these members is spot on, as im finishing up my first AR build, I scavenged the whole internet harder than the empire did finding the rebel base on Hoth.

Price wise the internets GREAT, walk into gunshows knowing the going price and see if you can negotiate.

But from what I saw the only advantage gun shows have are the ammo deals that can be made because you dont have to pay the expensive shipping.

sorry typed this from my phone so it came out reh-tarded

                Great advice guys ,,, thanks

All i know so far is i want a gun that will put out tight groups at 200yds.
                Will a 16" do that ?

A flat top ... open sights for now ... scope down the road.

I'm not going into combat but I do want a very reliable gun

Gunshows are fun. I like to go to people watch, check out weird stuff ive never seen before, eat hot dogs, watch neo-nazi skinheads shop for nazi flags, maybe watch a couple dorks get into a sword fight, IDK. But to ACTUALLY go there with the intent and goal to score quality hardware is a joke these days, unless youre a beef jerky/ brazilian power crystal enthusiast.

Yes, a 16 will shoot tight groups at 200 yards, should be good tight groups at 300 with the right ammo. You looking for a M4 style carbine? Thats what I have, and it shoots well at 200 yards.

gun shows are a great place to pick up Ncstar and other worthless china junk and slightly higher than eBay prices and still get the privilege of paying sales tax to the man. I am all but done going. after paying 12 to get in and 9 for parking. its just not worth it. That will pay the hasmat charge for ordering ammo online.

I bought my KD lower from JD machine at the del mar gun show for $90. i thought it was a pretty good deal and my research has proven so after the fact.

if you go to a show with something in mind it kinda sets you up for disappointment. I like to browse till something catches my eye.

i was able to get large pistol primers at the last OC show but i had to stand in line for an hour because the old bubba behind the counter with the 3/8" thick lenses couldnt find anything to save his life.
