    AR15 Ammo? Brand? Grain?

what do you guys use? is the wally world federal and Remington .223 any good? also is the price considered cheap like their hand gun ammo? i have never seen 5.56 there either? where and what type do you use or recommend? i don't own a AR yet, but i plan on buying or building one so i want to start buying the ammo now. any advice be appreciated.

    thanks

Walmart rifle ammo is way over priced. Their bulk packs run about $40 per 100 rds which is $0.40 a round (+ tax). You can buy equally as good 55gr ammo online for $0.30-$0.35 a round shipped.

      I usually shoot 55gr 223 or 5.56. Once I will shoot 62gr if I have any.

The standard plinking ammo is all 55 or 62 grain. 55gr is a little more common and usually cheaper. Buying at Walmart is good in a pinch, but you can do better online.

Any new .223 Remington ammunition should work in any .223/5.56 AR. You won't see much 5.56mm ammo in gun stores, .223 Rem seems to be the standard for the civillian market.

I buy PMC Bronze .223 from Palmetto State Armory, good prices and cheap shipping. If you want 5.56, you will have to pay more for XM193 (55gr) or M855 (62gr).

At the low end of the quality and price you will find steel case ammunition such as Wolf, Brown Bear, Tula and others. Steel case will work in most rifles, but many people advocate against it for various reasons. Until I started reloading I was using Wolf exclusively because I had no need for the brass. Using Wolf I had a few cases get stuck in the chamber and had to use a cleaning rod to dislodge them. I upgraded the extractor spring and installed an O-ring and the problem went away. I would not hesitate to use it if I had to.

For maximum accuracy many people use heavier bullets, in the 69-77 gr range. These match rounds will run $0.75 to $1 each.

I go to local fun shops first, then If there is nothing to be had, Ill shop online. Walmart has what? Rem .223 box of 20 for 9.89? GTFO with that. Try a local shop, you can get XM193 for 8.99 a box. Not only is a bit cheaper, but its eleventybillion times better then Rem at walmart. The only thing worth getting at Walmart is WWB Q3131 if its not too much.

I can usually find PMC for around $300 for 1000 (55 grain)
It's pretty good stuff for putting holes in paper at 100 yards.

If I'm feeling particularly frisky and want to go beyond that I break out my Black Hills 60 Gr. Hornady. But that's about $40 for 50, so I only bring that out if I get to shoot a pumpkin or melon at 200+

I gotta say though, I like that PMC. It always goes bang, it's easy to get a hold of and it's not to terrible in the consistency/accuracy field.
