lol good luck with your decision.

this vs that doesn't seem to work here.

Might as well buy one, either one. Then buy the other later down the road if your first choice didn't tickle your fancy or your fancy needs more tickling.

      I got an AR .223/5.56. an SKS 7.62x39 and a Saiga .308.

Wall mart has 100 round boxes of .223 for $39.
It's harder for me to find cheap 7.62x39 ammo than .223 OR .308 so I rarley shoot my SKS anymore. ALSO the ranges no likey the steel cases 7.62 ammo so thats something to think about.
Shooting bowling pins at 25 to 50 yards the 7.62 is awsome. hitting them past 200 yards the .223 will hit em most of the time, not so with the 7.62x39.

Now the 5.45x39 is very cheap and very plentiful but its a less accurate .223 IMO. And its corrosive and steel cased too.

So I end up shooting alot of .223 than the others. Now you can get a Saiga in .223 if you want to go the AK route...

I really love my AR the most...

Good 7.62x39mm ammo is about the same as .223 unless you go with the cheap corrosive stuff thats out there like yugo, or chinese. I like t hunt, so the 7.62x39 upper is great for deer in the brush. Do what I did, and save your self about $400.00 because you can't shoot both at the same time.
I like going this way also... I have 556 upper and 545x39 upper and can change them up when I want. The reason I did this is because the 545 ammo is so cheap... when I go shooting out in the desert, I'll put the 545 upper on, since I don't aim that much in the desert. And for target and general shooting steel (angeles range) I use my 556 upper.

I chose the AR platform because there are sooo many options to choose from... and for 545 ammo you really can't beat 300-350 per 2160 rounds!!

One thing with steel core ammo, is most ranges around socal don't allow it. Burro will before fire season and Ontarget range in south OC does also. When I shot the 545 out to 100 on steel, there was no difference in accuracy on a 12" steel plate.

          Did I mention $300 for 2000 rounds???

If you merely want a 223 or 7.62x39 for plinking and have no other requirements, then get anything you fancy; it's that simple.
