It's a question that calls for an opinion. Hence the YMMV.

My opinion is based on the HK 91,93,94 and the Colt AR 15 I used to own.

Back when I had these. They were looked down on because real men shot Garands and M1A's. Who was right and who was wrong? I can't say but make up your own mind instead of following the viewpoint of "most" and you'll go farther.

Side note: All three Hk's cost me less than $1,100.

Let's also say money aside, how about that.

Hmm... let's also say you had a fleming sear for your HK hosts & RR for the ARs since money aside!
In that case, from the rifles that I have personally owned (not a friend of a friends second hand info), of the .308 semi-auto lineup, all of my PTR's have been more accurate than my DPMS AP4 carbine (sold it), standard SA M1A (still have it), & DSA FAL (sold it). The M1A is very close in accuracy to my PTR's. I think in 5.56/.223 the AR takes the cake. In the 9mm category, nobody can knock an MP5 (if a solid clone can be acquired) for reliability & accuracy. If I had legal access to full auto stuff like I think you suggested, that would be a big deciding factor for me. My DPMS AP4 carbine, which btw was NRA's rifle of the year a few years back, didn't feed/eject reliably & accuracy was nothing to brag about. It was the 1st .308 I sold. The FAL I had was very reliable & pretty accurate, but I was a better shot with the PTR & M1A than it, so I sold it to fund another PTR. I'm sure there are good & poor examples of all the rifles discussed here. I'm not trying to sell you on anything, as it has no effect on me what you buy. Just sharing my experiences.

        I'm a big fan of 308.

308Nato out of a 6" barrel in the HK51k still has more muzzle energy than an AK47 with a 16" barrel. You just have to love that!

I suppose if fun factor is a consideration, there's the winner right up there.

Yeah you've gotta love a fun little toy that still has MORE power than a full size AK47. lol.

I wonder how many rounds it would take to toast a marshmallow on either side of that JP brake. They need a Beta C mag

Or a Vollmer HK 51B - as in Belt Fed.

The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

I love both platforms, the AR is definately handier and more ergonomic.
The HK platform guns are quirky, tempermental and not human friendly, but I will take and HK over any AR any day, they are just a lot of fun to shoot, and there is something emotionally evocative about them.

But once you have one running 100% it will still be running after a standard AR dies. They get filthy and love it. Never cleaned more carbon out of a weapon than a HK. The G3 was the only rifle to pass some Saudi dust test, the FAL and all the others choked. That said the new generation HK's which are actually based upon the AR18, will outlast a roller locked weapon imho.

Should the revamped XM8 win the individual carbine competition, which I hope it does, we could very well see an HK in the hands of our Army soldiers. The USMC is getting the HK416 soon as the IAR. Hopefully the MR223 will have all the lessons learned over the last seven years built into them already.

Regardless, I'll still be cleaning my roller locked guns for many years to come, with any luck.
