Clarification-please !!!

I currently own a semi-auto weapon that would normally fall under the restricted guidlines of California. I bought it out of state about 8 years ago when I was living in Ohio. The weapon has been at my inlaws house since I moved back to CA. I would like to bring it here. If I install a bullet button(which will make it CA compliant) what do I need to do in order to legally own and shoot it here? Do I have to register it? Do I need to do anything at all as long as it is compliant and I bring it into CA? Any and all help would be appreciated.

The flowchart is your friend.

Follow the AW flowchart to find out if your rifle is "named". If not then you only need to install a mag locking device and use mags that hold 10 rounds or less.
If your rifle is named then you'll need (depending on what type) to sell it or strip the receiver and rebuild on an off list receiver.

Check an see if the lower is either on the banned list or an offlistlower (OLL)

I just called my father-in-law. it is a Romanian reciever, and not listed on either appendix B or C.

Anoither thing, make sure you also only have 10 round magazines. High cap mags on a bullet button gun = Assault Weapon.

Regarding magazines, if you already had them in California before 2000, then you can bring them back in. If not, then take them apart and make them replacement kits.

Again, high cap mags are considered evil...

As long as you hand carry it across state lines, yes.
You can NOT just have your dad ship it to you.

If you were to go visit him and bring it back, that's fine.
If he were to come visit you and bring it to you, that's also fine.

If your father-in-law were to come visit, you, you would have to go through a dealer transfer as he's not your blood related father.
