Any one know a thing or two about Winchester 1895s?

I just picked mine up yesterday, every thing I have read says it has a 5 round magazine, mine only fits 4 and one in chamber, just wondering if this is normal. its chambered in 30-06

Unlike most Winchester repeating rifles, which fed from a tube magazine under the barrel, the Model 1895 featured a 5-round box magazine located underneath the action. This allowed it to chamber military and hunting cartridges with spitzer (pointed) projectiles. The Model 1895 also had a stronger action than traditional lever-action rifles (such as the Winchester Model 94), which meant it could handle the increased pressures generated by the higher caliber cartridges used by the military and for hunting.

from wiki, it does show a 5 rd capacity

While it may be listed as being able to hold 5, that may very well include the one in the chamber. I would try to contact Winchester and see what they say.

The one I have in .405 Winchester (built in 1907) holds 4 in the mag.

Nice. I'd love to find one from the Russian contract in 7.62x54r.

My original in 30-40 Krag holds 4.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

It's probably five in the magazine including the first round chambered, just like is the case for the Mosin-Nagant.

that is what i thought but the 5th doesn't even go in the mag i can put it in the chamber but then i have to hold the 4th down while closing the action so they wont double stack. hmm well i guess its a 4+1

I know the Russian contract rifles were designed to use Mosin-Nagant stripper clips, so if that is the case, they would have to be able to hold five in the magazine at minimum. Given the larger base compared to a caliber like .30-06, I don't see why any 95 in a similar caliber (same class) would hold less. Seems odd to me.

My brother has a '95 chambered in 35 Winchester - that ammo is very expensive. I can't remember how many go in the mag, but I found this link to the manual for the new ones - and the answer is (4).
