Hey, so I built an ar-15 from parts recently.

Can you do the same with AK's? If so who sells the lower recievers, upper recievers, and parts kits?

I know its cheaper to build an ar than to buy it pre assembled, is the same true for AK's

You can buy used parts kits for AKs, and new receivers. It is not a trivial task to build an AK, since they are riveted together, and the barrel is pressed into the trunion with several tons of force.

The AK doesn't have an upper receiver or a lower receiver. It is just a receiver. Depending on which receiver you buy you may have to bend it, weld it, cut it or heat treat it. It is held together through rivets and the barrel must be pressed in and then out. It is much more different than an AR15.

I highly recommend that you attend a build party for your first AK build. Without the help and knowledge of others, I'd still have a bunch of unbuilt kits.

And, now for my shameless plug:

AR's are assembled with off the shelf parts with a minimum of tools (complete uppers) and experiance.

AK's are built on a 100% receiver or a flat. Part kits need to be demilled and barrels removed from the trunnion. They take tools and skill to get them built properly and safe to fire. If your not mechanicly inclined or have the tools, you should hit up a build party.

or, the easy way is to buy a Saiga. Theyre Russian AK's in Sporter form. in .223, 7.62x39, or .308..Many places in CA and everywhere else sell them. You can configure them back to original AK looks for under $200, after the initial $350-400 for the rifle...Check out Saiga 12 Forum.. http://forum.saiga-12.com/ .look at some of the 'converted' ones...

It's a lot more work than an AR, but can be just or more rewarding. The simplicity of an AK is pretty amazing when you spend some quality build time with one. The biggest expense on tools for building one is a shop press and riveting tools.
