    Confused on scopes

I just bought my first AR-15 (and PTR91) and I need a scope. There are SO many out there that I do not know even where to begin (EoTech, standard, red dot, etc.). Any recommendations? I want to spend less than $500.

What is your intended purpose? Like defense, hunting, target shooting, etc

Target shooting. Maybe 100 to 200 yards at most.

Weaver, Bushnell, Nikon or Leupold. Lifetime warranties for most, if not all, of these. 3x9 magnification should do. Use other websites to get measurements of weight, size etc and check out SWFA.com for selection/price.

        Done.

for 100-200 yrds, get a magnified scope. 3-9x would be fine

Three options that I would consider are either going with a 1-4x20 or a 2.5-10x40, or a 4-16x40. A 1-4x scope like the Nikon Monarch African would give you a true 1x for home defense use and 4x for reaching out 200yds.

Bushnell's Elite 4200 line are exceptionally good scopes. You can pick up a 2.5-10x40 for around $430 or the limited production 3-9x40 for $300. If you want a bit more power then their $500 4-16x40 is exceptional.

For a mount I'm a big fan of LaRue's products but they run $200 and you can probably get by with a Burris AR P.E.P.R.

I havent been shooting long enough to really give some experienced input but i know on snipershide, the vortex viper series are a good bang for your buck. I have a vortex viper 4-12x40 and i am very happy with it. Vortex is known for literally THE BEST customer service with a lifetime warranty. There is a new line of scopes coming out in may, viper pst series, but they are going to be above your budget by a couple hundred but they do have some key features that everyone looks for: mil/mil, ffp (some models), zero stop, etc. If you are looking for a red dot sight, then they have the strikefire, which is only $150. The strikefire gets great reviews too. Vortex is highly praised on snipershide, just ask Scott at Liberty Optics: http://libertyoptics.com/index1.html Hope this helps...
