Bolt carriers do not, the bolts do.

True, but that's because .223 & 5.56 are literally the same round. I thought you meant having different calibered uppers.
You could have separate 5.56, .243, 6.5G, 6.8SPC & 7.62x39 uppers and use the same bolt carrier, you would just need to have different bolts for each specific caliber.XBL GT: Mmmmm Bacons
