New Savage M10 in .308, what scope should i get?

New to Calguns. New to shooting in general. Just picked up a Savage Arms Model 10 in .308 and am now shopping for a scope to get me out to 1000 yards. Any opinions on brands and also the power necessary to see a target out to 1000 yards. I currently have a hand-me-down Bushnell but only goes from 4-9X. I can barely see the bulls-eye on targets at 100 yards. My budget is up to $800 on new glass. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Higher power optics are not always a good thing at longer ranges. The limited field of view at high magnification makes finding the target difficult, especially trying to find it after recoil. I'd suggest something with a max magnification of 12-16X for 1000 yard shooting. There are a ton of options available for this application. On the bottom end of the price range @ $149.00 is this scope:

Make sure you get a 20moa scope base.
Most $800 scopes won't have enough elevation to get you to 1000yds.

For $800, look at the Vortex Viper.

Another one to look at is the Sightron SIII.

My $150 piece of crap gets me into 1/2 to 3/4 moa, and dials out to 1000 yards

I wouldn't reccomend most scopes at $150, but the FM Optics 4-14X44 flat out works.

Some people get lucky with cheap, crap optics. Most do not, however. Especially when they really begin to use them as intended.

For $800, the 2 Randall mentioned are about it. Or you could get something like the Bushnell 3200 10x, save your money for a few more months, get comfortable with the rifle, and drop the cash on a Nightforce down the line. That way, you'll be able to see if this discipline is something you really want to stick with, without breaking the bank.

Sightron SIII is a real nice scope....I have not checked out the Viper PST's yet...but, own a Viper 6.5X24X50. I'd buy another SIII in a heartbeat

If your new to shooting I would say an 800 dollar scope is not what you need, and 1000 yards is an extremely difficult shot to make even by an experienced shooter.. There are decent scopes out there for far less that will allow you to learn the basics and get you out to a few hundred yards which is much more practical

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm leaning towards Falcon Optics Menace 4-14x44mm FFP Tactical Rifle Scope. Found great reviews claiming it can take shooters out to 1000 yards. Also only around $400 which leaves some cash left over for 20 MOA scope base and rounds to get the glass sighted-in.

Headed to Metcalf tomorrow to punch some paper. Saw some guys with CALGUNS.net stickers last week. How can I get some of 'em? Gotta represent.

Those FM scopes sure look like Falcon ones.
