I wanted to to get a upper for my AR build and I wasn't lucky enough to get in the the $499 DD sale. I really wanted to go with the Fail Zero bolt basic kit and just a regular upper. How does this set up look. I'm not to sure with the quality of Del-ton, but with no bcg it comes out to $305 and $250 for the Fail zero. Is there anything better I can do? I really don't want to spend over $550.

There are so may options on uppers out their right now and I just don't know what to go with.
I think the best deal I've found so far is this Stag 2h with the flip up rear for $504 shipped:
I also like this DD M4 upper for $509 but no rear flip up sight:
I had a little fascination with piston uppers:
but it's now out of stock and it doesn't come with any sights.
My first option with the Del-ton and the Fail zero is still viable. I just want to make the right decision.Comment

Ok BCM looks good, but how about CMMG 14.5 + pinned flash hider:Last edited by Shawn L; 01-26-2010, 6:24 PM.Comment

Im thinking, kinda like you, for my next upper: DD upper, BCM 16" middy, or CMMG 14.5 + pinned Vortex.
The DD is expensive unless you find a good deal (I missed out too). And the BCM is $425 + BCG & CH. The CMMG is $485 and you get a Vortex or TROY flash hider.
Cant go wrong with a BCM upper, but if you like the 14.5" upper w/ pinned FH, then that $485 CMMG is not bad.Last edited by C_1; 01-24-2010, 7:30 PM.Comment

Those CMMG uppers are not bad, especially if you want the shortest barrel possible in an M4 configuration, and I think CMMG has mostly cleared up their quality control issues that they had in the past (poorly staked gas keys, etc). If you are married to the idea of an M4 style shorty carbine, they will do fine, and that is a good price. If you have a limited budget and want it now, then go with the CMMG. But if you can save up a bit more, you will really appreciate the quality of the BCM gear. They also have 14.5" uppers with pinned FH if that is what you prefer.Libertas aut MorsComment

Ok, I have to ask and may be flamed for doing so but how come every time someone comes to the board with the "which upper is better/should I get question" do a lot of folks come back with "for the money BCM is the best, get it and don't look back"?
I like BCM and they make great stuff but "for the money" does not apply with BCM.
"For the money" means this one is the same price as that one. BCM are not the same price as anything mentioned in this posting or in any of the others for that matter when talking about basic uppers.
BCM does not come with a BCG or sights. Yes they can be added and shipped complete but for far more money than the other basic rifles mentioned. That being said BCM is not a basic rifle. It is better than your basic plinking rifle and this is why it costs more. It is justifiable but shouldn't be touted as comparable price wise. A basic midlength BCM upper is $525 + $145 for BCG and CH + $250 if you want to actually have sights on it and most people want a free float tube/rail. If you add that all up before the rail you have $920. A free float rail/tube will run anywhere from $50 (basic no rail houge soft rubber) to $300/$350 for a really good DD or PRI option. You are pushing 1K + for your upper.
The others mentioned were closer to the $600 mark complete. So, IMHO "for the money" get a BCM or Fail Zero BCG like the OPs original idea and add that to the upper of your choice. Otherwise if you want to spend 1K + on an upper I have to say there are better options than BCM.Comment

I dont quite understand what you are trying to get at paperpuncher. He wasnt asking for rails or anything. And most uppers dont come with sights. He missed out on the DD upper, was asking us what we recommend (BCM), and then asked about the CMMG 14.5.
$485 for a CMMG upper, with RRA bcg/ch and Vortex FH, is not bad. But he could have something "better" and spend about $600 for the BCM upper, bcg/ch and handguards. The BCM is not a $1000 upper but I'll bet it'll run right there next to them.Last edited by C_1; 01-25-2010, 1:23 PM.Comment
