Forend options?

The SU16CA comes with the stock "bipod" forend and I am thinking I'd like to replace it with the compact forend offered by Kel-Tec if and when I get an SU16CA.

My question is on the legality of the compact forend in California. I read somewhere, something about anything that is ventillated near the barrel is not allowed in California. Would this apply to the Kel-Tec compact forend and thus make it not Cal. legal?

Thanks Ted...I think I'll go ahead with the mod then when I get the rifle. With all that legal mumbo jumbo about flash suppressor and that paragraph being about handguns what are the California regs. regarding flash suppressors, compensators, muzzle breaks on rifles?

You can have a muzzle brake (not break) or a compensator, but not a flash suppressor on a SU-16CA to stay legal. Be careful, some are compensators and flash suppressors. Bu-bye reported that he had good luck with Levang compensator on his SU-16CA, I personally haven't tried it. One thing about the compact forend; it does look cool, but also exposes more of the barrel and there is a higher chance you might get burned if you grab it in the wrong place after shooting off a few rounds.

The heat is exactly why I was thinking of putting it on. I've ready that the barrel on the SU16 can get excessivly hot and I was hoping by putting on the ventillated forend the heat would be dissipated easier and quicker. I understand that it would increase the amount of heat encountered by the hand but don't know if it is enough to hamper firing ability...anyone know?

Outside of the cool factor, I don't think it'll make much difference in heat dissipation. Also, the SU-16 isn't any worse than most rifles I've shot in heating up the barrel.

I have one on my Alpha and I like it.

The main reason I installed it is that I never found a good rest for my support hand on the stock bipod/foregrip.

The compact forend solved that for me.

The barrel will get hot and there is not much you can do about it.

Hands on polymer = OK
Hands on metal = Ouch!

BTW, Although you may be tempted by that new rail on the bottom of the forend... a forward pistol grip is illegal in the PRK.

(and probably not a good match for the normal non-pistol grip stock of the SU anyway)

Does that include rimfire?

I don't think rimfire is included in the "AW" definitions.

You may want to check the doj site to be sure.
