    Big 5 AR's

I was in a Big 5 today and they had an AR by Colt in 22lr.
Pistol grip and 10 round detachable magazine, no BB.
This should define it as an AW.
    Am I missing something?

    It's a rim fire .22, I don't think that needs a BB

AWs, the rifle versions at least, are defined as center-fire so rimfire .22s fall outside of that classification.

        +1

Rimfires are exempt from all the AW stuff.

if it were a centerfire rifle with a pistol grip and detachable mag it would be an AW but because its a rimfire those laws dont apply. that colt looks like an AR-15 but from what i've read its only similarity is looks, all the internals are completely different and non interchangable. You could have the same setup with a .22lr upper on an actual ar-15 lower.

Thanks, I thought I was missing something.
I just may build another AR with a 22 upper, and no BB?
They were selling them for 600 and could not keep them in stock.

if you build an AR and put a .22lr upper on it you dont need a bullet button. Plus you can always put a bullet button on it and put a centerfire upper on it, with that colt you cant.

                Joe,
I have my centerfire AR but would love to shoot a 22 for cost alone.
I have another lower, just no upper.

For $170 you can get the CMMG conversion bolt. Besides those Colts are just lisenced copies, to keep some other members happy, there was an FFL who had problems with a gigantic lot of them and was selling them as non-firing replicas (but YMMV ).

That "Colt" is not a real AR. It's a replica gun that shoots .22 LR.

I saw one of these at Big5 in Tracy today as well. It was cool to see a AR-styled rifle on the rack, even if it was only a 22!

yea it is a bit of a quandry since it is marked "colt" but it is really a licenced tribute rifle by i believe "umarex"

An alternative buy would be the S&W for $499 or a Sig 522 for $550+/-. Canyon Sports have both. But that just my opinion so take it for what it's worth.
