    30 or 25 in your 30 rounders

I heard some former military guy on the radio say that our soldiers in combat only load 25 rounds in their 30 round mags because they function better. Is anyone here aware of this practice and the why fors?
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I think it's 29(28 ?) rnds so you can tac reload with the bolt closed. No problems with 30 in a Pmag.

Yeah, PMAGs have the opposite problem of being able to accept 31 and then not load on a closed bolt.

Military magazines are almost never in great shape to begin with. We loaded with 29 to allow loading with the bolt closed. 25 rounds doesn't really make sense to me though.

Loading our magazines with 28 rounds was the norm in the Corps.

Only reason is to go to amber status real easily without banging the magazine into the weapon (no pun intended).

I kept all my magazines loaded to 30 rounds. No issues.

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.

All my buddies that were in the Marines still only load 28 rounds in the mags. I have zero problems loading 30rds and tac reloading with my mags. I've shot thousands of rounds this way with no problems. I'm just used to giving my mags a hard slap. I think even if I removed a round or two I would still involuntarily slap the mag in. Its just ground into my brain.

Funny, in the USMC, it was 28 rounds. However I thought it was so you didn't wear your springs out so fast.

28 rounds it is. Helps facilitate seating a mag on a closed bolt. Mag springs wear out from continuous compression/expansion cycles, not leaving them loaded indefinitely.

Mags should be able to be seated with 30 rounds in them. The 28 is to make it easier. Max loading is ok for a first mag, or in a range session, but when it hits the fan and your nervous, paniced, rushed, on the ground, etc etc etc it's nice to have that little edge of ease to make changing mags easier. Since you should train how you fight, you SHOULD download slightly. Downloading more than a round or two though is just silly...

I dont get the reason for the 28 or 30 rounds. I have always loaded mine with 30.

Some magazines will not seat fully with a closed bolt and forcing it could damage something. This may not be the case with some newer magazines though.
