Why are pistol uppers so much more then rifle uppers

Not just a little but hundreds more. They are basically the same thing except with a shorter barrel , Right?

Maybe you're shopping at the wrong dealers?

The shortest barreled ones can be more expensive, probably because the tuning is a ***** and they're making you pay for their extensive efforts to get it right.

What are some examples of these bells and whistles you are referring to on the pistol lowers?

Because people will pay what most vendors are asking for them! Plain and simple, Supply and Demand dictates the price. If no one buys them at inflated prices then they may drop in price, but if they keep selling at $200 or more then there is no need for them to lose $200 or more

It depends on what components are in the build. You can buy a bare bones pistol upper for cheap or a top notch build for upwards of $1,600. If you don't care if it runs reliable every time, then by all means go for the bare bones model. You can also just swap out the barrels and gas tubes on your current upper.

Take a look at the LMT. I want one of those and maybe a 7.5 from RRA/DPMS.
Used colt commando uppers pop up occasionally also.
