    BLM Ukiah (Yolo County)

I called up the Ukiah field office and was directed to the Walker Ridge area (north of Cache Creek). Up the I-5 to Williams, head west on CA 20 for a few miles and anywhere North off the 20 is fine to discharge firearms (of course, with a backstop and distanced from any road/body of water).

Just wondering if anyone has gone shooting around this area? Is it convenient? Or would I have to hike around quite some distance to find a good area?

    Thanks.

Mmm.. that's where I planned on going. Where the 20 and 16 meet, that's private land?

From the BLM site about Indian Valley/Walker Ridge and hunting/shooting:

Since there are many private property inholdings in the area, be aware of the boundary lines.

shoot where you like, but don't put "the" in front of highway numbers, and you will do ok.

Man the areas mentioned in this thread bring back some memories. My grandparents actually owned Indian Valley when I was a kid. There is(was) a cabin at the north end of the reservoir that we had. We spent a ton of weekends there.

Family had to sell the land to the state (forced) so they could put the reservoir in. I used to hunt Walker ridge when I lived up that way. Even after the reservoir went in, we would camp/shoot up there all the time. I haven't been up there in many, many years.

It's a neat place. Enjoy it!

Maybe 1 1/2 hours if that.

My old stomping grounds, been going there for 25 years. Just remember that you can't shoot on the lakebed despite what the water level is.

Whoa really? We did that all the time back in the day. I've even heard of guys spotlighting rabbits at night back then. That was about 20-23 years ago.

Is the nudey camp at Bartlett Springs (or was it Wilbur Springs?) still there?

We used to also, the last time I was there the new ranger made a point of it. I haven't been over Bartlett Springs road in at least 10 years.

Yes, still there. Hahahaha they even got a new bridge crossing over to their area. Those of you who might think that this is going to be Heff's vacation spot, nope. This will be your typical nudist crowd, you know, the ones we really didn't want to see naked. Warning!! Don't turn left at the bridge.

And I second the "please pick up your trash when you leave". My buddies and I go up there at minimum three times a year just to clean up and without fail the place is trashed every time we get back. This is a fantastic area for shooting (lots of pigs, small deer), OHV, and whatever the hell else you can think of that you can not get away with closer to home. Rangers will be around on Sundays if they even bother. More so in the spring/summer when fire danger is higher.

The only warning I would give is that there are a lot of back roads out there that people hike and ride dirt bikes and such on so please be aware of where you are shooting. There are bullets flying in all directions out there. Don't be that guy.

If you go about 1.5 miles past the north end of the reservoir the is a tiny little TT track (mostly cut with my yamaha's back tire) right next to a 150 yard lane I have used to sight in rifles.

It is a great place but every year I contemplate not going anymore since people keep trashing the place and crapping everywhere like wild animals. It has been getting a lot of publicity over the last few years which is the main cause of the deterioration of the land.

Yolo county flood control website will give you a lot of info about the place as well as directions, lake levels (really low over the last couple years, drove my truck to the middle of the lake bed), fire danger, launch info when the bout launch at the south end is open. Enjoy!!

This burned down yet again two years ago (looks like no one in going to rebuild it this time) along with the gazebo type thing across the road. A buddy of mine did manage to liberate a few of the original Bartlett Springs glass water bottles and wood cases for them before the fire. All the home brew beer we bring to IV is bottled in these to keep it authentic
