I am about to pull the trigger on a CMMG upper and I wanted to know if the 14.5" w/ the welded flash hider posses that big of a deal with build up. I would prefer the 16" but I can not find the CMMG 16" M4 style w/ a chrome lined barrel anywhere except 1 place and it's $100 more than the 14.5".

The issues with "permanent" muzzle device:
1.) you can't switch it
2.) if it's a flash hider, you can't go featureless
3.) you can't change the gas block (eg., if you wanted to go lo-profile someday)

removing muzzle devices and swapping requires cutting off the old and pinning/welding new.

Same with gas blocks.

He can't do that. Costs $60-100 to do it, plus parts.

No, it's not, if you think you'll be happy with it as it is. $100 is enough you can pay to swap down the road.

If you're not happy at some point down the road, you should sell it and buy different. Used market is pretty easy to get good deals.

Nothing's "fixed" about these rifles. Most people make changes.

I'd also suggest considering/trying to find a BCM 16" - $499 @ BCM when they come back in stock.

Now what about the carbon build up issues on a permanent flash hider? I read that you should take off your flash hider every X amount of rounds to clean build up and with the 14.5" you would not be able to do so.

No need to remove the flash hider to clean the rifle. You can get at all the carbon build up with good cleaning tools.

Agreed. I would not remove a hider for cleaning.

I have no need to switch flash hiders, and dont want to go featureless, so why not get the shortest you can get?

Not really...just get the BCM. Not much is "comparable"...you either want the best or not!

To me $570.00 with BCG is a good price for all the features.
