I paid more for my lower...but I found one that I really liked that looks a little different and is billet (POF Gen I). You're right, the difference between a $99 Stag lower and a POF billet lower for $200 is only cosmetic, but the cost difference isn't that much to me either. Also, this is probably going to be my only build, so I am going all out...

I've got a POF P-415 Gen 3 and it has an ambitexterous bolt release built in. I have found it very handy but it's just one more thing to break.

Neither is worth any more or less to me since a hack builder can just as easily screw up a top dollar lower.
Only time it would make a difference to me is if it were a factory built rifle.
Otherwise it is just a parts rifle.
I have seen builds sell for a premium because I built them.

cal guns lowers are at least somewhat cool, you can pick them up for 99.00 at rifle gear or any gun show.

My first lower was a billet (SunDevil), and I got that because it looked better than forged, and the roll mark was not something goofy or glaring (IMHO). Perhaps most of all, it was all I could find in November 2008.

I then bought a Noveske N6 lower, because I wanted an AR-10, and the N6 was sitting on the shelf at a dealer. And I liked the sound of the name "Noveske" and the roll mark better than Aero, the only other thing at the time available for an AR-10 in CA. And besides, Noveske carried some prestige (deserved or not). It was there, so I got it. It doesn't look nearly as nice as the SunDevil, and is rather unfinished and rugged looking, and in a way, is appropriate for the "take no prisoners" presence of the big AR-10.

I then got a Noveske N4 receiver, because well, same as above, and rather liked the idea of junior and and big boy Noveskes. This particular N4 was a special run with a "B" prefix (according to John Noveske) and has a nicer font and roll mark vs the current "E" serries. Plus, resale might be higher on the Noveske. It does not look as good as the SunDevil.

More than anything, I just like the name and the roll mark, and the minimal extra cost did not cause me to cut costs elsewhere on the gun, so why not.

If I was doing it again, I might buy Iron Ridge for the AR-10 and one of the nicer billet ones for the AR-15, just 'cause they look good.

There are differences worth getting/avoiding. Like logos. I HATE the Stag logo. Or finishes. I prefer a flat over a shiny finish. Or little things, like having the safe/fire engraved on both sides of the lower for use with an ambidextrous safety.

                  MDIBTY Factor
, there's really no benefit to buying a more expensive lower.

that's a very closed minded statement. Hydraulic buffers, piston uppers...billet lowers...all have a purpose and their respective fans. What works for you might be a less expensive lower, but don't **** on me and tell me it's a MDIBTY factor because I like the look of one lower better than another. I also have a Vltor Mur upper...way more expensive, but I like the way it looks better than the stock upper recievers.

I built a Kaiser and Spike Tactical Lower. Only differance I found was the pins fit just a bit tighter in the Spike. But, this small difference might have been with just these two lowers. Other than that, if you plan on selling the completed rifle later, name brans such as Colt, S&W or Bushmaster have a higher resell value.

Cost is in the eye of the beholder. I love my Rock River Arms.

Pretty sure Kaiser made Spikes lowers. Not sure about the new ones now.
