    Assault kits

So I've been hearing lately that there are legal ways to own assault rifles (above .22lr caliber) in CA, complete with pistol grips and all if you build it through a kit. Can someone point me to information regarding this and explain the legality of say, an ak-47 7.63x39 (10 round mag) in CA that is built from a kit?

Wellllllllllllllllllllll...First,theres no kit requirement..Go to most local gun stores and youll see them up on the wall..A while back some genius came up with the "bullet button"..Look it up..Then came radlocks..locks..ak locks...To answer youre question, yes there are lots of different assault "style weapons" you can legally have now..But DO THE RESEARCH first pertaining to your individual choice of weapon. Find a reliable and knowledgable FFL to go to and plug away with questions.Take everything youre told on here with a grain of salt...Find out the facts before you go buy a weapon and just take it out shooting..

Legal CA-compliant non-assault rifle configuration centerfire rifles may be assembled from off-list receivers and parts kits or purchased in various stages of assembled form.

As always, an FFL is required for purchase/transfer.

Allow me to be the first to point you to the "CalGuns Best Threads" on the Front page of the website. Read, read, read.
Still don't know? The Search features are very good here, too.

Still have a question? Feel free to open a new thread.

What you have asked has been answered, oh, I'd say a couple dozen times this year.

Just asnwer the following questions then you should have your answer. The key is detachable magazine. You can have all the "evil features" as long as you do not have a detachable magazine. Of course, CA overall length and minimum barrel length laws still apply.

Kit or no kit, "Assault rifles" are illegal. There are many CA legal rifles though that can be bought complete from a dealer or built from a kit.

I asked this question last week. Look up Pre Ban Question. It seems like you can pretty much buy everything to build an AR-15. Its just entirely up to the person to be compliant with California. We are on the honor system it seems...

              Good luck!

Most FFL dealers I've been to are full of FUD. I was told at one popular Orange County gun store that federal agents were staking out gun ranges and arresting people with OLLs and that it was dangerous for me to own one. It didn't stop them from doing the transfer of the rifle to me though.

Stick with Calguns for your info, OP. You might get some wrong opinions but they will quickly be corrected. If you must go to an FFL dealer for info, go to one that specializes in these types of rifles (OLLs). They know the laws well because it's their bread and butter. Check out Riflegear if you're in the OC area. Those guys are squared away.

                      You must be new.

Calguns is the reason there's access to these guns, the reason Bullet Buttons exist, the featureless alternatives, etc. Forum members are responsible for all of it.

Sure, take individual posts with a grain of salt (i.e, read AND understand them, check consensus, etc) and then verify their logic with the text of the law, but you're not going to get better information from an FFL (most of whom operate in a vacuum of stupidity).

SMG_VII your obviously talking about owning a "Sport Utility" rifle right?

That whole "AW" name is a anti name in my book anyway...

Here's the basics in an easy to read form:

Just about anything out there that's banned can be had as a clone and then, with simple adjustments, can be made to be compliant.
