Just wondering if you could actually keep a completely stock (default) saiga configuration but change out the butstock on a saiga to a normal AK style, it seems like it would have better ergonomics and would be easier to shoot than the AKs that Turners is selling without a pistol grip being that the saiga has the trigger assy moved more rearward, it seems like it wouldnt be that bad.

Also, would this trigger the 922r thing?

No it would not trigger 922r. An AK stock is not as ergonomic as a Saiga butt stock though. You will also have to modify the AK stock to fit. The moved back FCG will be in the way.

Installing a thumbhole stock would also not trigger 922r, even though you'd have to go fixed mag due to California AW laws.

That's correct.
These are the offending features banned from importation:
Pistol grip
Capacity to accept military high cap mags
Folding/collapsing butt stock
Forward grip
Night sights
Bipod (military type)
Flash suppressor

The importation ban is completely distinct from the CA AW features ban. You must comply with both.
