When i was in the Marines we shot the barrel out of a Beretta. but it was a gun we all decided to shoot so it basically got fired for a couple of days straight by abotu 24 guys. And we brought some of our own ammo cause we went past our alloted amount. i know we shot over 10 000 rounds of ammo. One of the guys in my team had a uncle who worked at a gun store and he got us some 9mm ammo cheap and the armorer handed some more over also. The gun still shot but it wasnt very accurate anymore. The frame started to develop cracks in it from the blow back of the slide ( Im assuming). This was about 13-14 years ago. Not sure if the frame cracking problem still exists or if it was fixed. My buddy has a beretta and he shot it numerous times and he hansnt had a problem

Before I learned to inspect barrels, I bought a Mosin M-44 which has a definitely shot out barrel.

You know it's shot out, when the bullets leave their SIDEWAYS SILHOUETTES on the target.

I am not sure if that is "shot out" or not.
I'm hoping to get 1,500 rounds out of my 6.5x284 before it loses it's edge. Since the throat is the first thing to go I'll set the barrel back 1/2" and see if I can get another 1,000 out of it. Those Krieger blanks are too expensive to throw away early.

          Have shot out a few...

Krieger 1:7.7 twist in .223 went 10,000 rounds
Krieger 1:7 twist in .223 went about 5,000 rounds
Krieger 1:13 twist in .308 went about 5,000 rounds
Remington 1:14 twist in .220 Swift went about 2,500 rounds

"Shot out" is a relative term. These barrels all went from shooting WELL under 1/2 MOA to shooting 3/4 MOA or more. With different load combinations and longer bullets they would still do ok, but one would not win any matches with them. When unscrewed they didn't have much rifling near the throat.

Just took off a Krieger in .308 that had less than 3,000 rounds through it, and it still shot well, but not the 1/3 MOA like it did when new.

Keyholing would be a good clue.

Not always, though. I tried some of that funky SSS in my Marlin 60, it would keyhole because it was moving too slow to get a stabilizing spin (I'm guessing.)

Never shot a barrel out. I can't imagine what it would take, but a LOT of shooting!

Well I don't really care about sub .5 MOA accuracy anyway, so I guess I won't have to worry. I'm primarily interested in AKs, 7.62 and .223 ones.

I have an old Savage 73Y (single shot bolt action .22LR rifle) that has had a few thousand rounds put through it in the last 30 years (was my fathers before me) and while it does show some wear, it still fires true.
