In addition to what some said, if deciding what caliber to go with in a SHTF situation, you want what everyone else has. If you need ammo, 7.62x39 isn't my first choice on American soil. Same goes for the parts, if your weapon goes down, and everyone else has a 5.56 AR, aren't as many parts you can utilize for your rifle if needed.
In my own experience, steel cased ammo isn't the best thing for an AR. I do not claim to be a metalllurgist, but I have cleared pieces of steel cased 5.56 from extractors more than once. I have heard that the brass allows for expansion, and the steel cased stuff is less forgiving. Whatever the case may be, I don't shoot steel cased ammo in any of my AR's anymore. Other's have told me the laquer on those rounds isn't great in the tighter tolerances of the AR versus the AK as well.
