    ak optics mount

which mounting position is the most sturdy/rugged and will hold zero the best on the ak platform? the side mounting mountsthat come on the rifle? or the ultimak rail style that mounts where the gas tube is?or the one that larue just made that goes on the rear sight? i kno aks dont need optics but i do and its my money so there ,plus if i tactical one out that means i have to get another in original condition

I used an ak with ultimak combo in Iraq for work and was never let down by it. Held zero with an aimpoint mounted up front but moved the weight of the gun towards the muzzle and was limited to just an aimpoint type sight. Most side mounts raise the optic too high for a good cheek weld. I have seen some that have brought the optic lower but they are not that common and only offer limited mounting options. With both of those options you have limited mounting space so a red dot is it. The beryl type rails which most countries have started to add to modern aks is the best option. They provide room for dot sights and magnifiers or 1x4 power optics or larger. Being able to ID targets beyond 100m is often overlooked. Having tested 3 of the more popular US made beryl mounts the tws one won out for me based on features and price. It sits the lowest, provides a quick disconnect, return to zero and a rear peep sight. All these features and its price is almost 125.00 cheaper than the closes rail with these features. Its also made in the USA.The sights on the ak are one of its weak points and adding a optic really increases the effectiveness of the platform.

What do you think of these low pro side mounts. http://store.carolinashooterssupply....7-scope/Detail

I also wanna mount an M4 Aimpoint on my SGL. I like the durability of the Aimpoint on top of my AK. Anyways, do you know which is the best qaulity of the low profile side mounts like the ones i listed? Kvar is pricy but probably better qaulity i would assume. Do you have any experience with these mounts?

I think Kvar makes quality parts. In addition, Picatinny rail is more precise/stable than Weaver type rail.

TWS rail is a superior mounting system, it needs to be paired with Larue or GG&G quick detach base to make them QD-capable, in case your scope/RDS does not co-witness with the enhanced rear peep sight.

I dont mind if it doesnt cowitness, I figure i will use the aimpoint and if breaks, then i will detach and use irons. I dont really like the cowitness thing. It seems like more in my sight picture than i want. I wonder if anybody here has a kvar side mount and how they like it?

I still like the TWS rail more. Extends the iron sights for more accuracy, has a longer rail, and you can take off the dust cover without taking off the sight and risking losing zero.

heres a better picture of the ultimak rail me personally i thought about the TWS rail but the only thing is that it way too bulk in the rear for me as far as rear sight i just order HK sights for my AK instead of the crappy one that is one there now

Buddy of mine has one with the ultimak rail, it is nice. If it were me though I'd try to find some "genuine russian" type setup.

If you want a weaver one that fits on the side rail, there are tons at kalinka. Be prepared to file or shim it though as some aren't as good as others.
