saiga conversion hand guards

I have a saiga 5.45 enroute from Atlantic Firearms and I'm collecting parts for my conversion
I just read in a thread here that you can't use standard AK hanguards, is that true?
I thought you just needed lower hanguard retainer
Am I wrong?
What do I need to put a standard four pice set of AK furniture on it?

Hey, I was in the same boat as you last week. Here's what I did. First I found some furniture from the legendary 69mach1. Next is to obtain a Rommy G gas tube. Mine needed a little material taken off the top to fit just right but you might not have to. Just compare the gas tube you buy with the stock saiga one and little by little use a hand grinder to take off whatever material need to be trimmed. That takes care of the upper handguard. For the Lower, I didnt feel like shelling out 80 + dollars for a bolt on retainer. After some research theres a technique I found that saved a lot of money. I buaght an egyptian akm lower hand guard retainer ( or any akm series ) and cut it length wise, but not completely through, and bent it around the barrel and then used a nut and bolt where the take down lever goes. Worked great and for only $15, it looks great and feels solid. If you have any questions on how I did this just shoot me a pm.

I did the same thing as the poster above, ie. took a cheap $15 handguard retainer and converted it myself. I cut through enough to make it bendy, refinished it to match the rifle and finally fastened it with an Allen head screw and a blind rivet. I also filed a groove into my barrel at the appropriate location, just like on a regular AK, and blued it. The gun uses all AK furniture and of course I added an AK gas tube - it adds authenticity.

not to threadjack but if you put 74 handguards on and a muzzle brake but not convert the trigger group and leave the fixed stock on, do you still need 922r compliance?
