700 SPS 5 shot group out of the box

For what it's worth here is a 5 shot group through my .308 rem 700 SPS varmint 26"bbl Millet trs-1 scope.Shooting Hornaday 150gr BTSP #3033 48gr BL-C(2) winchester brass and cci #200 primers. Not sure the of the MOA wich seems to be a popular expression these days.If I could figure it out I'd say.Rifle is how they come out of the box. Fired at 100 yards

Very nice grouping. Was this 50 or 100 yards?

1 MOA = 1 inch at 100yards (actually, it's SLIGHTLY more, but not enough to make a difference, so we call it 1")

That looks to be about 1-1.5", so you're managing 1-1.5 MOA

The SPS Tactical is supposed to shoot about .75 MOA out of the box, so you're doing pretty good!

A guy at work is really good with bolt guns,We're going to float the barrel and glass bed it soon,we'll see if this helps the group tighten up.

              Shouldn't it already be floated?

Seeing as how they shoot sub-MOA out of the box, it's probably you

But yeah, floating and bedding that sucker is a good idea anyways.

EDIT: OOPS!! I'm sorry, for some reason I read "SPS Tactical". That gun is sub-MOA capable out of the box. I don't know what the Varmint is capable of.

Have you worked on the load and bullet length yet?

Just the load, recipie, the length was set to what ever Lymans 49th stated.Should I measure the chamber and set to that for increased accuracy?

You are off to a good start bro! Now you are going to have to try some Amax's 155 & 168g, matchkings168 & 175g, and other powders as well (varget, imr 4895 & 4064) the list could go on & on...Im sure you could get tighter groups, load development is going to keep you busy for a while.

long thin barrel and light ammo. im sure the gun is capable of better though.

my stock sps tactical in .223 posted a .28" group once with 75gn match king.

nice start. definitely gives you an indication of future performance. i've shot a few 700s and they all are sub-MOA out the box. my advice is to work on the basics for now. find the load that gives you the best performance and load as many as you can and just practice the basics (breathing, trigger control, cheekweld) with that one load to limit any variables. you'll see those groups shrink before your eyes. then get back to hand loading. consistent shooting techniques will in my experience outweigh most gains made through load development in early times...
