    Proper Eotech placement?

I know I'm gonna get mixed answers here because I've seen em mounted in all positions from up close to the CH to on the HG itself. I mounted my 512 about half and half. I've read somewhere that you dont really want to mount it over the barrel because something to do with the heat Is there any truth to that? Anybody with any tips on placement or is it just preference?

    Heres where I mounted mine

Anywhere you like it. It is advisable to keep it off hand guard rails (possible loss of zero due to movement).

I like to keep it back farther so it doesnt distract me if I transition to buis.

You have it mounted like most shooters, especially if you decide to mount a magnifier behind it. Just make sure that the actual EOTech screw mount is on the upper receiver and not on the rail, due to the zero issues dirtbiker mentioned.

If you were worried about possible loss of zero, you can use the Yankee Hill Eotech riser (http://www.riflegear.com/p-366-yanke...ech-riser.aspx). It is only clamped to the rail on the backside and can "bridge" the gap over your forearm and receiver. I actually have one that I don't use (moved the Eotech). If you're interested, PM me.

I have also heard that they are susceptible to heat damage from a hot barrel and thus should not be mounted above the barrel. I don't know how true it is I've just heard it

You can run'em hot! I've got one on my SOCOM 16 M1A and have shot it until I can hardly touch the thing and the sight didn't fade a bit. These sights were designed for combat, hence big-boy rules: running-and-gunning...

I believe, though am not sure 100%, that the Aimpoints and EoTechs should be mounted as far forward as possible. the closer the dot or reticle is to the muzzle, the more accurate they will be, IIRC, because they are not the same as a front and rear sight plane arrangement, they are more like a laser sight, but instead of a laser's dot projected on the target, they provide a dot or reticle that locates the tip of the barrel.

                  YMMV.

Unless you're going to run a magnifier that looks a little far forward. I've got a Larue Tactical mount for mine which has a spot for a BUIS that I'm not using so it's a little more further forward than I'd like.

FWIW it's your rifle so wherever you like it/want it is where it should end up. If it's not zero'd in yet I'd move it around and see if its' more comfortable closer to the rear sight. They are ment for CQB more than 100m+ shots hence the 2MOA dot. Covers 8" steel at 400 yards. First hand experience with that proves it.

Yeah, that's the A1 carry-handle mount. Ugly but effective!

I've mine a little forward of where you have it, but I had to leave troom for the magnifier and backup sights. For balance purposes, you want to put it as close to your shoulder as possible.

Mine is exactly where yours is. Mounting on last spots of reciever. When it's out forward like that, the housing blocks less of your field of view than if you have it way back by the charging handle/BUIS.

FWIW, Larry Vickers runs his in the same spot you've got yours, probably for similar reasons.
