varmint has a heavier barrel. regular SPS has a sportster contour, varmint has a "varmint" contour...

I have the 700 PSS which was replaced with the SPS you are talking about.. I'm not even sure what changed...I think minor stuff.

actually , the 700P replaced the PSS. the SPS has a less substantial stock, that's about the only difference...

I'd stick with a .308 unless there's a need for shooting past 1,000 yards, or if you're hunting game which warrants such a round. The price to shoot a .300WM isn't worth it to punch normal paper, not to mention the life of the barrel is reduced from the magnum round. Also, the action on a .300WM is longer, so if you're going for a magnum perhaps a .300WSM.

SPS varmit is awesome, SPS tactical is the next step down from the 700p.

OP if you want to do target shooting get the Varmit from the 2 you have listed.

If it's not a bench gun, go with the lighter model. It sucks having to haul around gear that is needlessly heavy.

lighter model meaning the regular SPS? i was checking one out today and im surprised how light the SPS was, how is the recoil on such a light rifle?

I don't know the models that well, as I've been looking into the Savage line of rifles. However, I did have a .300WM in a light hunting rifle. I shot the gun twice and sold it.

So, it may be fine for hunting with a magnum on a light rifle, but it's not fun to shoot. Since you're going with a .308 I wouldn't see any issues with the weight of the rifle.
