    Difference Between M1A and SOCOM?

Does anyone know if the only differences between the Springfield M1A and the Springfield SOCOM are the length of the barrel and the stock?
If I wanted to configure a SOCOM into an M1A, I would need to change out the barrel and the stock and anyting else? Thanks!

the gas tube nut on the socom has a sight mount on it. i think thats the only major part that is different, besides the barrel. the operating rod is different, and super tight to remove for cleaning, but will work for the conversion. i dont think the stock is different. it looks identical. i have never owned a socom ii, so i havent seen that stock.... just the socom 16. fair warning.

BTW -- cheaper and easier to SELL your SOCOM and buy a Nat'l match M1A
        Please.

The M1A is a 20" barrel, the Socom 16 and II are 16" barrels. The Scout Squad is an 18" barrel. As for turning a Socom into an M1A? It already is, and I don't think you can just swap the barrel out. Not sure on that one.

I think the op rod, op rod spring, gas system, stock, and barrel would be the differences. I'm pretty sure I read that the gas system on the socom is different than the scout and full length models.

Maybe another Calgunner can enlighten you.

talked to springfield last year about this very issue. they said the barrel can be swapped out for a longer one. said they would be glad to do it for me. dont remember the price, but do remember it was marginal. give em a call.

The M1A is a rifle made by Springfield Armory Inc.

SOCOM stands for Special Operations COMmand, "the unified command for the worldwide use of Special Operations elements of the Army, Navy, and Air Force."

                        Stock lengths are the same.

The ONLY differences are the non-standard gas system, short (16") barrel, and short muzzle brake on the SOCOM.

                        Standard M1A's have 22" barrels.

I would recommend the M1A loaded with Stainless barrel.

what, exactly, is the difference in the gas system? it looks exactly the same as the standard length m1a.... just askin.

Honestly, the part that I put in quotation marks was taken directly from the home page of US SOCOM. I don't know why they didn't include the USMC- I was actually a little surprised and wondered to myself if the USMC isn't actually part of SOCOM ops which doesn't seem to ring true to me. Odd.
