    AWB???

    Hey everyone!

I'm planning on purchasing my upper receiver and one of the options listed is AWB - are those uppers for non-CA residents?

    Please help.

    Thanks,

    Matt

An upper is an upper. There are no uppers banned in Ca. Of course, NFA rules still apply and your choice in uppers needs to comply with the type of build you are planning. Why don't you start here:

NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor
    California DOJ Certified Fingerprint Roller
    Ventura County approved CCW Instructor
    Utah CCW Instructor

Offering low cost multi state CCW, private basic shooting and reloading classes for calgunners.

I just don't understand why on this site, www.model1sales.com they differentiate CAR uppers and CAR AWB uppers when shopping for upper receivers. I don't want to buy the wrong upper and be screwed.

Depends on how you are going to build your OLL - featured with a BB you can have all the evil features short of an overall length of less than 30", barrel less than 16", or an attached flare launcher.

Featureless w/o a BB you can't have any of the evil "pre-ban" features, and you still have to keep in mind the barrel length and overall length.

The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

It looks like they are still refering to the Federal AWB which sunsetted in '04. So, it's really a moot point but, a lot of dealers still refer to "pre-ban" and "post-ban" configurations even though it really doesn't make a difference anymore. For your California build, you will need to decide if you want a featureless gun or a fixed 10 round mag rifle though. So, in Ca, it can make a difference.

I do have a BB for my lower.
So should I just go with the non-AWB upper? Or is there a difference?

With the BB build you would go with a pre-ban configuration.

Some states still use the AWB criteria for what is legal or not; I believe, but could be wrong, that NY state is this way.

with a BB you can use ANY upper you want as long as the barrel = 16" or more permanently and its not a 50 BMG.

This is pure FUD and you're wrong.

OP, the reason they are giving those options is due to a few of the east-coast states which still have AWB's on the books that match the old Federal ban.

The Federal ban expired in 2004 and DOES NOT apply in CA. The Federal ban regulated things like threaded barrels, flash hiders, and BAYONET LUGS. Most of the uppers you see that are AWB-compliant have crowned muzzles with no bayonet lug.

In CA if you are running a bullet-button equipped rifle you are allowed to have ANY of the CA-AWB features. The only ones that count on an upper are a vertical forward grip (but does not include bipod) and a flash hider. CA does not regulate threaded barrels on rifles.

Again, the Federal AWB DOES NOT APPLY in CA and you're allowed to have the dreaded bayonet lug and threaded barrels.

You can have a flare launcher on a bullet-button equipped rifle in CA.

You just can't have a grenade launcher.

Well, technically the rifle CAN have a grenade launcher and still be AWB-compliant, as long as it's got a bullet button, but you can't own a grenade launcher to begin with, so it's a moot point.

Correct. California has never included marshmellow/weinie roasters in any AW ban.
