AR upper assembly with triangular handguard..

I have an uncle who would like for me to build him an M16 clone. I've only built one AR and it's my carbine. My uncle asked me to see if I can build it to look like the ones he used during the vietnam war. I was looking for parts and the only problem is that I can't seem to find any upper assemblies with the triangular handguard. I know I can get the handguards and put them on but I dont have the tools to remove the front sight/gas block to be able to replace the handguard cap(unless the triangular handguards will fit onto the updated round handguard cap). I did a search(google) and only came up with one complete upper assembly, which is on gunbroker used for around $500. I would like to get a new assembly if possible. If I can't find a complete assembly then I guess I got to cough of the dough to get the front sight bench block. I've been wanting to get it but felt like it wasnt something that was needed(even though I did wanted to change my handguard to freefloat tube/rail for my carbine).

edit: Will the triangular hand guard fit onto the round hand guard cap??

If it comes down to getting the parts and putting them together you'll be the first on my list to contact. I would prefer to find a complete assembly instead though. Thanks for the reply.

Sarco has everything you need. Best thing to do would be to call them and tell them what you want to do and they will set you up:

Ideally, you'll need the M16A1 barrel (20" skinny, 1-in-12 twist), M16A1 upper receiver assy, triangular handguards, M16A1 flash hider and split washer, and the M16A1 butt stock to make the whole thing look like the real deal.

One more thing, if you get the correct A1 barrel, the triangular handguards will fit the handguard cap with no issue (which is also triangular BTW).

              Thanks a bunch
When you say "M16A1 upper assy" you mean the fixed carry handle right?

Both A2 and A1 are fixed carry handles; the difference is the rear sight assembly. The old A1 rear sight is adjustable for windage only (that's what your dad used in 'nam.) whereas the A2 rear sight is far more complicated and is adjustable for both windage and elevation. Take a close look at the picture I posted; both of those are M16A1 upper receivers with windage adjustable sights only. Now take a look at this picture; it has the A2 upper with the fully adjustable sights:

Thanks! I didn't know the difference. All I know was that the carry handle on my carbine has both elevation and windage.

Tiny sticking point.....the A2 rear sight is adjustable for DISTANCE, not elevation.

All zeroing elevation should be done with the front sight.

Good point! Thanks for the correction.

You can also try Gunny's Surplus for the M16A1 upper. I bought one from him a year or so ago. As mentioned, Nodak Spud is the place to go for a retro lower.

Good lord those things have gotten expensive. Glad I got a load of them when they were $129.
