I am currently working on my first bolt action rifle build. I am thinking about a Remington 700 SPS (30-06), JAE-700 Stock, and a Millett TRS-1. Anyone recommend anything else (better barrel, better base rifle, stock or scope?)

ive done quite a few builds over the past couple of years and the sps 20" tactical is a great starter rifle. when the barrel goes bad, upgrade it. sell the stock and bottom metal and you can usually get 110+ for it. the j allen stocks are the best, and your choice of scopes is great. in the under $400 range, the trs 1, in my opinion, beasts out the super sniper and menace scopes in the tactical department. the burris fullfield scopes are great for the non tactical look. I thing youve made some great choices.
both these started as sps tacticals

the 20 inch barrel shoots tighter.Comment

they may have left-handed stocks -- call and askKevinComment

i'm no scientist- but i agree that a shorter barrel may have less deflection, but i'm more concerned with velocity loss of a shorter barrel compared to a longer barrel when stretching out a bullet's legs around 1000+ yds. not that it cant be done, it would just make more sense to use a longer barrel so you wont have to keep adding powder to extreme pressure levels....Comment

There would have to be a specific version for left handed use.
The Jae 700 stocks have not even been produced yet and are not slated to be produced until next year so this whole thread is moot at this time.Randall Rausch

oh.. i didnt see that the OP wantes to build a 30-06 rifle... i guess i'm now a little confused with the OP purpose? what is your goal for the rifle- long range tactical, hunting, all-rounder, benchrest precision??? i only ask because not too many people building 06's these days.Comment

I recently decided to make a run at long range shooting as well. After reading many articles & talking to guys who know what they're doing, I bought a 700 SPS Tactical. I upgraded the stock to a HS Precision stock (same that comes on the 700P), used the HS Precision 10 rd detachable mag conversion, & a Falcon Menace FFP scope. I feel that it's a pretty solid first gun for a rookie long range shooter like myself. Here's a great article that helped me decide on barrel length: http://www.tacticaloperations.com/SWATbarrel/.Liberals could fk up an anvilComment

Almost everyone that decides to go with a shorter barrel used that article as their reasoning.
Just keep in mind that swat and police snipers almost never take a shot past 100yds.
That is why a 20" or even an 18" barrel is an excellent choice for police snipers.
If you want to get into long-range (600+yds) shooting, the velocity you get with a longer barrel is very helpful.Randall Rausch

That's a very good starter setup that will serve you well to 600yds.
