    whats considered a "good" grouping?

I am wondering what is considered a good grouping at 100 yards for an AR using iron sights in the sitting position from a bench

sub-3MOA? For an average shooter would be my guess at what one may think a "good" group is.

hell if I can keep it in a 8" circle at 100 with irons I'm happy. A 8" circle is pretty dang small at 100 with no magnification.

I'd be happy with 1-2 MOA with basic factory ammo

It's all relative. There are so many variables to call a good group for AR.

I've seen some to swear by nothing but sub MOA. However, some are more than happy if they can get 2-3 MOA.

Fist sized groups would be plenty acceptable with irons.
The thing with firearms is that they are not like any other consumer product, simple ownership of one carries a lot of responsibility.

It also depends on what position you are shooting from.
Bench, I think a 6 inch group is good, Prone/laying down you should be able to shoot better, like 3-4 inch groups.
I think if you can do 3 inch groups at 100 yards you are a pretty good shot.

slap on a scope, you should be shooting 1-2 moa at 100 yards
1moa or better you are pretty good in my opinion.

Wow, i can barely hit 4"-5" groups (10 shots) @ 100 yrds. this is scope with xm193. i guess more practice is called for!

With any decent AR and new US made ammo , I keep my whole shooting session ( 60-100 rounds) with in the 9 ring on the std pistol target ( 5" or so)

prone @ 200 yards with irons:

scopes aren't necessary for "good" groups, it just makes it easier
