I used to use mobil-1 synthetic motor oil and their wheel bearing grease. they both worked, but why not use a good quality gun lube? I switched to Slip-2000 EWL and have no complaints. with this stuff a little goes a LONG way. A few drops and you're GTG. I paid $14 for 4 oz a year ago and still havent ran out.

Automotive engine oils and such are detergent in order to keep the contaminants in suspension so the can be filtered out. Non-detergent oils are for you lawn mower so the crap settles out into the sump. I have two or three cans of various gun oils that are only a few ounces each which is enough to last me till I am 90. I could take a quart of ATF into two or three after lives!

Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I'd pass on the ATF...it might get a bit smokey after sustained fire.

Gear oil just plain stinks. Open up a diff cover and get a whiff. haaack

        Mobile 1 or gun oil.
        Curious....is this to save cash?

Would you put Rem-Oil in your race car?

There is a reason ATF or gear oil or brake fluid or bull semen is not packaged as gun oil.

              It's because it's not.

The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

I have run mobil 1 synthectic oil in a carbine course (3-day maybe 2000 rds give or take a few) and it runs great. it does smell like a car motor though when hot but funny.

its good enough for expensive car engines and protects more when hot. it works great with no problems.

but there are some people who say gun oil is for guns and car oil is for guns. but do what you want

I wouldn't even put Rem-Oil in my guns. It's too lightweight and doesn't do any kind of job of lubricating and it only does a half-decent job of protecting the finish from corrosion.

Anyone can package something up and call it "gun oil", but that doesn't mean it will work.

I've done a lot of research regarding the issue like Grant did for his article, and I've come to the same conclusions. Dexron ATF works great and is an absolutely ideal oil for firearms use. It's also about 10x-100x cheaper than "gun oil" and comes in a bottle 5x-10x larger.

ATF along with Lubriplate FGL-0 grease is the best and least expensive lube combination for firearms. Period.

I will have to confess that I've used transmission oil in my IPSC pistols. Worked great, but I usually clean my pistols after about 1K shot through them. I haven't really used it on my ARs, but I'll try it on the next outing.
