    AK mag question

I am sure this has been asked before but I could not locate any info using search. I was wondering if there is a follower or type of mag that locks the bolt back on an AK when empty.

If you're talking aftermarket, then the Tapco one's will if you dremel the two dimples off just below the mag feed lips which will allow the follower to sit high enough to work as a BHO. The bolt will of course, slam shut as soon as you try to remove the mag. I cut a notch in my safety lever to act as a manual BHO and it works great. This way I can notch the bolt handle back before I remove the magazine, and release the safety, and the bolt, once a fresh mag is attached.

I believe only the Yugo AK mags are the only military mags that have a BHO mag follower as standard.

I did this to a tapco follower, the bolt ate the plastic and made a ramp past the follower. Modify a metal follower if you want it to work well.

True, my Tapco followers are showing signs of wear in the plastic, but the BHO still works on them. Alternatively, you could use the steel followers from the cheap chinese 5rd mags. They have a flat backstop on the follower too. You still have to dremel the dimples flat though.

The Yugo mags have the BHO feature, I think I have a few, PM me with contact info. I can send you a couple.

I did the same thing with my Chinese mags and also put a lever on my safety to to make things easier. As soon as the bolt locks open, with my right index finger I pull back the bolt (about 1/2") and with my thumb I simultaneously lift the safety which then locks the bolt to the safety notch. You can then change mags (right handed) and drop the bolt using the safety lever while your hand is on the grip. A good work around in my opinion, and no more pulling the charging handle after the mag change! You can buy the modded safety levers at Krebs too I think.

This film shows the safety mod in action. It starts right after the bolt has been held open by the follower mod.
