AR15 headspace gauge? Anyone in Bakersfield have one?

I just pieced my AR and have a new barrel with a used bolt. I would like to get the headspacing checked but do not have a gauge. Unfortunately none of the shops have their gunsmiths working on weekends.

Is there a way to check the headspace without a gauge? Can I insert a bullet and case without a primer and see if it will cycle?

Does anyone here in Bakersfield have a gauge to check?

    Thanks guys,
    Mark

The headspace is set by the extension that is attached on the barrel. As long as you have spec parts, it doesn't matter if you change bolts.
