Tips, Tricks, and Strategy for Distance Shooting

I thought I would start a thread on distance shooting because there are so many people new to rifles and long distance shooting with both irons and optics. I think this may be a result of Obama getting elected, but there are a ton of people out there with limited knowledge and brand new guns.

If you have any tips or tricks regarding shooting rifles at distances (100, 200, 300, 600, 1000 yards) please share. I myself am relatively new to distance shooting and could use some tips and tricks to pull my groupings in.

Keep in mind the target audience of this thread will be people new to the sports, so make sure you are clear and try not to use acronyms unless they are extremely obvious.

Lets help get everyone up to speed!

Consistency is key at long range. Your rifle, ammo and technique all have to be consistent for the best accuracy at long range. What kind of rifle will you be using? caliber? The best thing to do would be to reload and develop a good load for the particular rifle, this is a long tedious process but the payoff is precision.
Technique is the most important thing, you will need to master all the fundamentals of marksmanship. Here is a link to a bunch of good info http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubb...=216239&page=1
Another important thing is practice, practice, practice.

For the purpose of this thread lets say .223, .308 ARs as they are the most popular. Let's say barrel length is between 18-22" as most people would be shooting barrels in tat range of length who are new to the sport.

As the poster above mentioned, consistency and practice is the key. Same stance, same sight picture, same reloads, etc.

I am no precision shooter myself, but an important skill for distance shooting is knowing how to range.

Once you know the ballistic performance of your match grade ammo, you have to be able to know how far your target is.

Learn to determine the size of the object in the distance in relation to your optics' sight picture. Obviously, changing the zoom (magnification) will change the sight picture.

This will keep you busy for a while (^_^)

Take a look at the California Precision Rifle Club Board forum down in the competition section, there are a lot of stickies and other information there.

The only thing I know is from what I've seen watching Magpul's Art of the Carbine.

From prone, apparently you should have the rifle aligned with your spine, and once you've got your target in your crosshair, close your eyes for a moment and open them. If your crosshair moved off the target, you're not naturally aligned and over compensating with your muscles. Did that make any kinda sense?

There are stickies in the CAPRC forum. There are no quick tips or tricks. There is just a lot to learn.

The quick tip or strategy is that everything matters.

From the stuff you can control (mechanics, what you shoot) to things you can't (weather, where the sun is, your pulse).

As you get better you'll start to weed out stuff that causes big changes, then try to stamp out things that make the little differences.

Any of the forums linked here will give you solid and legit information.

The only tip I can personally offer is us urbanites have to put in the effort and commitment to shoot at the full distance ranges. It's the only way to get experience and improve.
