how hard is it converting a semi auto 50bmg into 50dtc?

I am in the process of buying an EDM arms M96 in 50dtc caliber which got me thinking. I asked them if they would do the change to their semi auto version and they said no. I havent even bothered asking barrett.

that being said, how hard would it be to buy a semi auto 50cal barrett or edm arms rifle and convert it so it fired the 50dtc rounds?

has anyone done this or know of a good gun smith to talk to about it? or does anyone know of any semi 50dtcs out there? thanks in advance

I think it would be a simple matter of turning down the barrel/ chamber to 510 dtc specs.

a good smith with a lathe and that reamer could probably do it for less than $300

of course thats if the barrel is not attached in some funky way.

Both of the above companies said that they could make a DTC when I asked a couple of years ago.

50DTC is smaller than 50BMG, so you'd have to either buy a new barrel or cut-down the barrel and rechamber.

You're probably better off buying it that way to begin with, or having the rifle's mfg doing the alteration, if willing.

do you recall what the price was for it?

It was informal. They had their semi-auto on display at the Ontario Gun Show and I asked if it could be done, and they said "why not". Problem is they wouldn't know how to make it a non-CA-AW other then removing the pistol grip.

Give them a call and have lot's of these...

...because it would be a custom job.

Serbu had plans to build a CA legal, .50 DTC, BFG-50A semi auto with an attached swing down 10 round magazine, just like the CA legal Barrett's, but I haven't kept up with his blogs, so I don't know what became of that.

what changes would need to be done? would a BB for the mag be sufficient?

                          I would think so.

It would be like any of the countless ar15's in CA with a mag lock.

I remember someone was selling 50bmg surplus 500rds for $1000
                          I thought that was expensive.

I am looking for an inert 50bmg round to use as a bullet button. does anyone have?

It is as simple as changing the barrel.Serbu charged me 400 dollars for the labor plus barrel. The DTC is the same casehead so the bolt face isn't a consideration. As far as power levels are concerned, the DTC round actually has more case volume than that of the BMG,so cycling wouldn't be an issue either. While it is not illegal to possess a BMG marked receiver(only complete rifles that chamber and fire the bmg round)you probably will have a very hard time finding a FFL who will DROS a gun that is marked as a BMG.Barrett is the only semi auto that is readily available to the public, and his California agenda is the .416.Pauza's,EDM's,and Serbu's are as rare as hens teeth...

I'd say stick with the Windrunner in .510DTC - it's a fantastic rifle. The amount of work that would need to be done to make an existing .50BMG semi-auto into a DTC rifle wouldn't be worth it to most folks.
