I always thought .243 was the min but it looks like the letter of the law does not exclude .223...

Do not use varmint grenades for deer. You want some controlled expansion, deep penetrating stuff. Barnes in the 70gr+ range.

                      Sportsman..

Another thing I take into consideration when going out into the great unknown is...

Even when I'm hunting deer or Yotes or whatever....there is a chance something else might be hunting you. Not too much around Ca (mt. lions obviously) but when hunting out of state too.

I often carry a side arm but I also like having my rifle be able to take care of stuff that might wanna eat me. Though possible, I wouldn't want my life resting on a .223 with an angry bear coming for me.

Sight in with what you will be using to hunt. Period.

NO! No, no, no! That is great for 'yotes and varmints. It leaves a big, nasty, but usually shallow wound on bigger critters. Don't use the varminting bullets on medium game. They wound more than kill quickly and humanely.

Now, for the original poster... You aren't listening, nor does it seem like you ever intended to. Go cruise some of the hunting forums, and see what they think of noobs hunting deer with .223. And you are a noob hunter, because otherwise you would already know the answer to this question, and wouldn't have asked it. Yes, you can hunt deer successfully with a .223. And many people do every year. But many people also wound deer with it every year as well. It is NOT legal in many states for a reason. Your first obligation as a hunter isn't to get a deer. It is to insure that our tradition of hunting can be passed on to future generations. Doing the "tacti-cool noob" thing is counter-productive. You aren't using enough gun to give you a good chance at getting humane kills. You are not one of the ultra-experienced hunters who knows exactly what he is doing, and where to place the bullet. And when not to take the shot. Going out into the woods and slob hunting with your AR only lends credence to the antis who want us portrayed in the public's imagination as the murdering thugs who killed Bambi's mom. Not as responsible sportsmen. You going out without enough gun makes it that much easier for them to find wounded and disfigured deer to put on display all over the internet. If you want advise when you post on here, great. People will be happy to give it. But if all you are looking for is validation for your unwise decision, and are going to keep coming back with a bunch of "yeah, but.."s when people tell you it isn't a good idea, maybe you should head over to 24 hour campfire.

I have actually run into plantations before outside of SJ in the Mt. Hamilton area. No Mexicans found though.
