    Sig 556R Dust Cover Flaps

    Good afternoon all,

I have a Sig 556R and the little rubber dust flaps behind the charging handle are normally each held in by three rivets.

My top rubber flap has broken loose and fallen out with the broken off portion still seated underneath and secured by the rivets.

Short of drilling out the rivets and putting in a new dust cover flap with new rivets, do I have any options here? It seems like a lot to go through for such a simple part and makes me wish Sig Sauer did not use rubber that would become brittle enough over time to do this.

Attached images illustrate what has happened.

Contact SIG Sauer (USA) and see if it is still covered under their warranty.

      AFAIK...
Pre-2017, SIG Sauer (USA) would fix the dust cover breakage on the 556R, since it was a common part breakage due to use over time.

Thank you very much. I purchased this 556R back in 2015 so it's not likely to be under warranty, but I'll see if they'll let me ship my stripped upper for dust cover replacements.

        Cheers guys

I'd certainly look for qualified people to perform the repair. I'd be willing to bet those rivets are peened flat on the back to prevent interference with the bolt and special tooling is required to replace them. Especially since forming the rivet will have a tendency to squish the seal out of the joint.

I’ve always had that question if those rubber closures would eventually cut loose . I have a Sig gen 2 556R in 7.62x 39 and have considered that situation. Now I know.

I have two Sig gen2 556R. Haven't shot them in years. Now I have to go pull them out of the back of the safe and look!

They are great rifles though. Probably one of the best platforms to shoot 7.62x39
