My 7.62x39 compromise PSA KS-47 AR Platform

I have had an AK for the most apart, off and on since 1986. the first was a Poly Tech Type 56 Spiker. Registered it in 1990, and sold it in 2000, when forced out on disability retirement from the SO. Since then I have had a dozen different ones. Why so many? As much as I respect them as a weapons system, I don't like them. I prefer AR platforms and Mini-14s (especially my 581 Series Tactical). I still have almost 20 preban mags from when I had the RAW Type 56 and my law enforcement days (I had a AK for a trunk weapon at one point!)

Recently sold my last AK, but wanted a 7.62x39, other than my SKS. Pulled the pin and bought a PSA Gen II KS-47 7.62x39 AR platform that takes AK mags. I had one a couple years ago and loved it, but was talked out of it by a friend.

From the PSA web page: Mine will have Magpul BUIS, Red Dot, muzzle brake, and light. Pics to come.

I've got an early one and it's hella fun. Very glad I bought it, and shoot it often. It whacks steel real nice with an old surplus eotech on it.

I have Sparrow, Resurgent Arms, and Juggernaught "non pistol grips" in my parts stash. I'll try them all. I have Resurgent on my 5.56 M4gery, and like it, and have used Sparrows before, also. I just picked up a Juggernaught and like the feel.

I also have a Thordsen Type II and Type III floating round here somewhere. Might look cool in the Gen II.

The rifle is on its way from Texas, then starting 10 day DROS jail. I work at the shop, so I'll be able to play around with different configurations while its in purgatory,

I'm 72, and have seriously thinned down my collection to my "guns I use regularly". I have my Mini-14 Tactical (my Home Defense Carbine), an M4gery AR (on a prototype lower receiver from an aborted 1990 USAF Commemorative AR project), an SKS (just because everyone should have one), and now the KS-47 (to replace the AK). No more 12 Gauge for me, though, as my detached vitreous in my left eye makes heavy recoil a no-no.

Mine is a standard AR lower, an old Morgan Hill Franklin.

The barrel is the secret sauce, a Hbar ARD nitride/cryo. It's amazingly accurate, hits 400 yards with a 7" spread.

The rest is Sparrow grip, lightweight BCG, adjustable gas block, extended firing pin, 75% buffer spring and a 3 oz tungsten powder buffer. Shoots smooth as silk. C-Defense mags work every time.

I?ve got the Gen 1 version with a Sparrow Dynamics grip.

                    Solid rifle. Enjoy, OP!!

If it utilizes a standard AR15 bolt....invest in a few backup extractors. It's really the only fail point of the platform. If I was looking for a 7.62x39 variant now, it would be based on a AR10 platform for beefier bolts.

IIRC, the Gen II has a re-enforced extractor.

"The new TC-E KS-47 Bolt carrier group features a new and improved Toolcraft enhanced extractor for durability. Featuring an extended firing pin and designed to work with AK-47 magazines, the carrier is made of nitride-treated 8620 steel, and the gas key is attached with grade 8 bolts and properly staked."

I bought an enhanced extractor, and it sheared off after 600 rounds. No matter what the material is, it's just thinner for the 7.62x39 bolt. Maybe my rounds are hotter, but so far, I have gone through 3 extractors in 5 years with moderate range time. It will happen at some point, and it's just good to have backups.

Good point! Thanks. Keep it taped inside the pistol grip, like I did with a spare pivot pin for my USAF 601 (1960 made first model with a non-captive pivot pin) I had in the Reserves.

Came into the shop today and started 10 day. Put on Mabpul BUIS, a Bear Creek 2 MOA red dot (cheap but works well), a Juggernaught grip, and Strike Industries stock block. Have a short Warthog style brake Ill put on after we bore sight it. Pics to come.
