    Range report JP15 upper

I finally got to go out today on a quick trip, and got to shoot the new (to me) upper. Its a jp15 stainless upper with bennie cooley brake and vtac handguards. Got a burris PEPR scope mount and cheap truglo scope with fine crosshairs. I fed it a bunch of different ammo and it was quite interesting the results that happened. First thing I shot was centurion m193 ammo and it shot decent after zeroing it in. I was able to get it zeroed in about 5 or 6 rounds. I was at roughly 80 or so yards out and that was all that was doable where I was shooting down at a river bar. Wind was around 15-20mph with 25+ gusts. It was rough shooting because of the dirt and motorcyclists ripping up and down the road through the silt and me having to cover everything up when they came by. Anyway, after zeroing it, centurion put down 10 shot groups in the 2" range off a bipod on rocks. I finally found a big flat rock to sit it on and the group tightened up a bit. I then tried some south african m193 and it shot about the same but I couldn't use my JP 3lb springs on one of my lowers so I swapped lowers out to a standard weight spring and it shot fine. I tried PPU m193 and it shot between an inch and a half and 2" depending on the shooter. Then I tried winchester white box .223 ammo and it was one big hole. All of these were ten round groups and it was barely over the inch center to center. I was using the 100 yard sight in targets with the 1" squares on them was the only reason I could figure out how well it was shooting. Anyway, i'm really pleased with this as an impromptu shooting session with a bro-in-law and friend from denver who came out for the week. I can't wait for next sunday at the real range when there are far less distractions and crap flying around.

Got to blast through a hundred rounds or so of the SKS too which is always a hoot. I was showing off and asked them to point me to something to shoot and never thought I could hit it but low and behold a tiny little can of campbells chicken and stars was blasted to the nether world on the first shot. I laughed so hard because it was pure luck shooting off hand at around 80 yards or so.

On a side note, if anyone in the humboldt area wants to pitch in and come together for a cleanup day down there, I'd be willing to haul some trash out of there because its getting really bad from crappy shooters leaving their junk down there. I took all that I brought and this bad etiquette is leaving a bad taste in the motorcyclists mouth which i'm a part of both scenes so I hear it from both sides. Anyway, food for thought.

Oh, and don't forget your hearing protection. I got too excited to fire some off and left my muffs on my head on the first shot. Man, with that brake and no protection, it sounds like a grenade going off. My ears just rang for the first 30 minutes and as i'm typing this, it feels like somebody is holding my ears shut. Rookie move, but we've all done it at least once.

Try some match ammo at the range with less wind. It'll amaze you LOL.

I too am satisfied with my cheapo Truglo for now.

Going on sunday with some match ammo and more WWB with how it was shooting. I can't wait to get out of the wind and into the protected area of our range. At a whopping 5 smackers, its worth every penny to shoot there. Its not the clearest at higher magnification and in fact I didn't use it at more than 10x today which seemed to be the best for what we were doing. I can't wait for my match ammo i'm trading "wooger" for here. He's da man for the ammo.

For all you picture whores, here she is as if I haven't taken the same photo on here like 3 times now. And wooger, here is your ammo thats going out tommorow if you see this!

Nice rifle. Is that a duraglock grip?

The Truglo isn't too clear above 10x but for 60 bucks it serves the purpose. I cleaned my groups up so much better than with an EOtech and 2.5x magnifier.

Nope, MMG grip. I'm going to try the duraglock grip next when he perfects them a bit better. I figure there will be a 3rd and 4th gen to come out and they'll all have their perks. If nothing else I can buy a 2nd gen used. Sorry for the crappy pic, its a cell pic so go figure.

Sweet shooting, as the river bar down there is quite distracting. I'll do my best to make it up to the range next Sunday and we can law down some rounds together. I've got a bunch of load development to do for my LTR .308.

With match ammo you should get .25"-'33" groups at 100 yds.
I get 1" groups with PMC Bronze.
Great barrel. Mine really likes the 77 gr. Black Hills ammo.

With a 1:9 twist, I don't know that I'll be trying any 77gr ammo out of it. I have 2 boxes of 75gr that i'm hesitant to even use because I feel like i'd just be wasting it. Is yours a 1:8 or what twist rate?

Skkeeter, hope to see you there!

I wouldn't waste the higher priced 77 grain bullets with a 1/9 twist barrel. I've tried them with my DPMS 1/9 and I had some keyholing at 100 yards, not a complete sideways penetration, but I can tell they won't be accurate at longer range, which is the intent for the heavier VLD bullets. My 1/8 will shoot them great at 100 yards, but I haven't shot the Stag 1/8 twist barrel past 100 yards. Now my Colt HBar has and it will hit an 18x24" steel plate at 400 yards all day long and I've watched through a spotting scope that it can group 5 shots into 3" to 5" at 400 yards with 77 grain SMKs.

Wow, thats some grat shooting at 400 yards with a .223!! I'd be really happy with that myself.

                        Mine is a 1 in 8 twist.
My 1 in 9 likes the 69 Gr.
