Bad luck with Silver State .308 Ammo...

Had an expensive day at the range today. Out of spec ammo from Silver State Armory is to blame.

Before you make suggestions on how to solve this problem. Save yourself the effort. I appreciate the thought but trust me we already tried it. Damaged the BCG in the process. There is nothing more I am willing to even contemplate doing myself other than bring it to a gunsmith at this point. I am fed up with it and gonna just throw money at the problem rather than damage the upper itself.

Long story short turns out after some quick research online this ammo's casing is out of spec. As a result, there is a live round stuck in the chamber of my AR10 type rifle and the bolt will not budge. I do mean will not budge.

Tried pulling with all my might, tried mortaring it, tried using a chuck of wood and mallet, tried a steel bar as a shim and an actual hammer (knowingly sacrificing the BCG which now has a cut mark in it I had to hit it that hard), only thing left to do is have a gunsmith remove the barrel. I do not have the tools to do this myself or I would have done so before knowingly sacrificing the BCG.

Now granted, this ammo is several years old. Given to me by my dad who moved to AZ about 5 years ago. The company may have sorted this out by now. Just be forewarned. Not good ammo.

Sounds like a bad one .Have you found a local Smith to help you out ? Hopefully they can salvage the bolt head if the Carrier has the damage. Good luck on your repair OP.

Solar Tactical in Livermore offers gunsmithing services. However, they were closed for inventory today. I WFH on Fridays. So hopefully next Friday they can bail me out.

Unfortunately, you are not the first person from whom I've heard reports of bad SSA ammo. In fact, it was quite common.

SSA was acquired by Nosler (2013?) and, as far as I'm aware, they ditched the SSA moniker as fast as they could because it had built such a bad reputation.

Anyway, at one time I had heard (but do not have first-hand experience) that if you contact Nosler, they will exchange good ammo for SSA ammo; so you can try contacting them if you are so inclined (and let us know if it works for you). Not sure how an "exchange" would work with Kali's "licensed ammo vendor" BS, but one would hope it's comparable to sending a firearm in for warranty work (i.e. it can be shipped directly back to you versus through an FFL). This is Kali, though...

Now to be fair. It could be the Stag 10 upper. But ammo is usually the culprit for issues like this. I have over 1K rounds of it…that I am afraid to shoot. My upper is hosed. Done a lot of damage to the bcg and even cracked the handguard trying to get the round out on my own. No joy. Hopefully the gunsmith will have more luck. Hoping to have time on my wfh day this Friday to take it in. Stag was no help. Outside the 1 year warranty. Cannot believe they only have a 1 year warranty on guns. Crazy.

Have you tried standing the rifle with barrel up and spraying a few shots of PB Blaster Penetrating Lubricant down the barrel and allowing to soak over night? It works, dont ask me how I know...

Not the same thing. PB blaster will penetrate around the case.

Free-all might be another option as it will break down the powder residue as well.

Can’t be much residue. Less than 25 rounds fired through it. Cleaned it the night before. But can’t hurt.

The general gist is to use a known, thin, penetrating oil and let it soak and hopefully it will pop right out.

Johnnys reloading bench on YouTube had a similar issue, he used grease to extract by pumping the barrel full of it.

Maybe some upside down canned air can freeze things enough to get enough room to move the bolt?

                      I like the suggestion above.

Throw it in the freezer for a few hours and mortar it again.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

I had problems with some of their 223 at least 10 years ago, probably more. I think I still have a couple of boxes laying around somewhere...where it will likely continue to lay until I trade it in armageddon for something useful.

Sucks your rifle is messed up.

I built a bolt carrier puller years ago for when this happens.
It pulls the carrier by pushing against the back of the upper receiver.
Doing this will eventually cause the bolt to rotate as the cam cut in the carrier interacts with the cam pin.

I had a crap stag upper that did this. Wasn’t the ammo. Not saying it isn’t the ammo but I’d be suspicious of the upper as well.
