    scope touching

I just scoped my 30-06, the scope is a simmons whitetail classic. It has a large objective. My question is, if the scope is touching the barrell will it affect the scopes performance? Or perhaps will it damage the scope?

I dunno if it'll damage it, but it's certainly not ideal. What type of bases do you have? It might be possible to shim the base, people frequently do it to make coarse elevation adjustments, so I think you could probably get away with it for raising the scope. You only need to get the thing off the barrel a few 1000ths.

    Regards,

It can.. Depening on how much upward pressure is on the scope it can cause the lenses to become out of line, damage the lens on recoil, bend the scope body, ect..

I have seen it not be a problem on a .22, but IMO this is NOT a good thing for a large rifle..

Get a set of taller rings.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

I like the scope, it is alright I guess. I also have leupold rings on it, they are the medium height. The scope is touching the barrell just a little bit, I can fit a dollar bill through where it's touching,it is a little tight to get through but it gets through. I dont know if that will help my explanation on how much it's touching the barrell.
cornholio, How good does the scope hold zero? I just mounted mine today,I wont be able to try mine till tuesday.

Sounds like you need a slightly taller set of rings. A .22 is one thing but, you're talking about a 30/06. It is conceivable that recoil could cause sufficent barrel jump to damage the scope. I say go a bit taller or shim it.

Dunno if its considered kosher, but when I had to shim a scope I used brass stock. Went to the autoparts store and bought a cheap set of brass feeler gauges, they're used in places where a normal steel gauge can't work.

With the brass set, you get thin brass in multiple thicknesses. Cut out little strips and lay it under the bases of the scope rings, not between the rings and the scope body.

Dug that idea up somewhere on the 'net years ago.

Is brass feeler guages what I ask for?

You can go to a hardware store and ask for brass shim stock. They'll have a bunch of different thicknesses and all you really need is .005" (5 thousandths) or so. I'd buy a small piece just an inch or so square depending upon how small a piece that they will sell you. Use regular scissors and trim it to fit under the scope bases, front and back. You can trim notches around the scope base screw holes and that will help hold it in position when you screw the bases down.

Most of the Orchard Supply Hardware stores have this stuff and it is usually located in the department that does the screen door repair. It is usually underneath the table that they do the repair on. Worst case scenario. most hobby shops carry it.
