I see nothing wrong with the Mini14. Our Department authorized us to purchase AR15's, or Mini 14's, and go through a class. Two Officers in my class had Mini14's. I know one of them couldn't afford an AR at the time, but already had a Mini14. Both Mini14's preformed flawlessly in class. The only problem gun was a DPMS AR. That Officer didn't pass the class.

I have shot a few Mini14's in the day. I would definitely consider buying one if I had space in the safe. Not a bad choice for an "Obsolete" gun. Hell I guess one could say the same about a lever action, which I have several of.

Keeping my M1A, I find .308 winchester an all around more pragmatic round for civilian rifles.

A "more pragmatic round" for civilian rifles...

Being pragmatic is about solving problems in a sensible way that suits the conditions and .223/5.56 meets that criterion under certain conditions. That's why the Mini-14 has been available in several calibers over the years. Same with AR's. In fact, it's the basis of the new sniper rifle being investigated... Marines to field multibarrel sniper rifle to replace two existing weapons.
